Divorce

Divorce

A Story by ThatGuy
"

An unhappy wife and mother wants a divorce, but it turns out to be more than she bargained for.

"
Mom wasn't happy, and she hadn't been happy for a long time.  She had gone ahead and called a lawyer.  The divorce process was started, and everyone could feel the tension in the air.
"Why do you want a divorce hun, I don't understand why you're so unhappy.  We have a nice family, two cars, our own home, and we aren't swamped in debt," dad had said to her.
"I just feel like I need something else, its nothing to do with you guys.  I love you, I really do, but I have to get out of this marriage.  I'm feeling overwhelmed or underwhelmed or something, I'm not even sure anymore," she had replied in vain.
Dad looked sad, I remember seeing him in the kitchen from the living room.  Tears were making his eyes damp.
"Kids would you come in here please, your mother and I have something to talk with you about."
I looked at my sister, and I could tell we were both feeling the same thing.  Dread poured through us.  We turned off the television and slowly crept towards the kitchen.
"Kids, your mother has something she wants to say to you," he said without looking at us.  I could tell he was broken up over the whole mess.  We knew what it was about, why put us through this part too?
"Children..." she started,"I want you to know, this has nothing to do with you, but I feel, I want a divorce.  I'm not happy in this situation.  I know I'm the bad guy here but I hope you know I still love you."
I looked at my sister, then at dad.  "We understand mom.  We're sorry you feel this way.  Is your decision final?" I asked.
"I'm afraid so.  I just don't feel complete here, I need something different in my life," mom replied
Dad came over to stand next to us.  He put his hands on our shoulders and said, "Ok hun, if you have nothing else to say then I'll say my goodbyes to you.  The house is yours, the cars as well, and I've left you with plenty in the bank to take care of yourself.  I hope you enjoy the rest of your life.  We won't be able to come back for some time."
"What do you mean, you can't just take the children from me.  We haven't discussed anything about custody or child support or anything about the property."  Mom looked shocked.
"We don't need to do any of those things.  We must depart from here, there is a short window that opens every decade or so, we can't miss it," Dad said.
"Window?  What kind of window are you talking about?  I don't understand what you mean.  I won't let you take the children away from me."
"I'm sorry hun, the protocols of my species are quite clear.  You wanted the divorce, you can't just divorce one of us, you must divorce the entire family.  Kids, say goodbye to your mother."
"Goodbye mother,"we said in unison, because our minds have been linked since birth, as well as our dad's.
Dad handed mom a small black device, something like an ipod, but much more advanced.
"This will allow you to communicate with the children whenever you wish, just place your palm on the flat surface.  It will only respond to your touch," dad explained.
She held the small flat object in her hand, she looked amazed, bewildered, and lost.  I knew this was a shock to her limited imagination, for she was only human.  She never knew we were so much more, or that dad had come from somewhere else.
Dad pulled out a similar device and activated it, it spoke to him in his own language.  Sister and I each had one of our own as well and we activated them.  Mom faded with tears running down her cheeks, but it was really us who had vanished from her.  We were on our way home.

Divorce is awful. I could feel the tense emotion before the device was given. This reminded me of when my mom decided to split. I think this should be the prologue to a story!
