Autumn Muse

Autumn Muse

A Poem by Leo Elderkin

On cadence sweet, your beating heart,

on dreams and knowing soon---

rests safe in harbor, in old man art.

You and I and harvest moon,

in breathless autumn whisper---

on cadence sweet, your beating heart.

Plead that now, I most contend,

at leisure's well announced---

on cadence sweet, in old man's art.

Words that flows as rivulets,

on down the paper's slide---

rests safe in harbor, for old man's art...

rests safe to dwell... in muse's heart!

This is a kind a villanelle, with its double refrain. Most villanelle poems consist of 19 lines, but some shorter versions do exist, for example Elizabeth Bishop's "One Art" which has just 13 lines, as yours does here. An interesting poem!
