“Ahh I’m going to be late again” Noelle, a 12 year old girl with long blonde hair, tanned complexion and bright green eyes, cried as she ran across the streets of Magipolis, “you should’ve waken me up sis” she muttered to herself referring to her older sister Meredy who had apparently already woken up and just left Noelle to be late to school…again. Noelle never did figure out why her sister never woke her up, at first she had thought that Meredy was just teasing and eventually she’ll get it over with and wake Noelle up but as it went on it was clear that Meredy would never wake her up on time and so Noelle simply left it alone but was always late as a result of that.

Noelle eventually arrived at the place where she went to everyday and hoped to graduate from, the School of Magic and Sorcery, it was the world’s foremost place of schooling for aspiring magicians and sorcerers; located at the heart of Magipolis, the capital city of magic, it served as a stepping stone for those who wished to be wizards or witches in the future. Here the best teachers, books and courses are set for the students with a wide variety of subjects to choose from and only the best facilities that the magical world had to offer. Noelle looked at the school and smiled, it was her dream to graduate from here and become a great witch, “Ah…so the weakest witch arrives again” a sneering voice said.

Noelle turned around and saw a tall girl of 12 years with long blonde hair wearing the standard uniform for all female students which consists of a black cloak and a pointed hat along with hard leather, “G-good morning Meredy-san” Noelle muttered while looking down.

“Ah? What was that?” Meredy asked mockingly, “Speak up I couldn’t hear you.”

“I said good morning Meredy” Noelle said a bit louder.

Meredy scoffed at Noelle, “I thought you had quit from the schooling after your last test.”

“I passed my last test” Noelle said defiantly, “and I’ll pass any other test that the school gives me, I’ll never give up on my dream to be a witch.”

Meredy looked at Noelle before laughing at her, “You? A witch? How hilarious” she said, “you can’t even summon a familiar yet.”

“I-I’ll summon one” Noelle said before muttering to herself, “eventually.”

“Yeah...when you’re sixty” Meredy said laughing before she walked away. Noelle sighed and simply continued on her way however doubt was already growing in her mind, it was true that she wasn’t able to summon a single familiar, and without a familiar she won’t be able to pass the final exam and if she didn’t pass the final exam she wouldn’t be able to become a witch and so on and so on...Noelle sighed to herself again; it was a mystery to her why she wasn’t able to summon a single familiar...everyone was able to summon one, it was a necessary component as a familiar allows one to fight effectively in combat since the familiar would be able to distract and engage the enemy while the wizard or witch cast the spell.

However no matter what Noelle tried she wasn’t able to summon a single one, she would summon one but then it would dissapear in a few minutes like it was avoiding her, she had tried everything and read every book there was about summoning familiars but she still wasn’t able to summon one and that worried her, a lot, and she had to admit about what Meredy said, she wouldn’t be able to become a witch without summoning a familiar, “I wonder why?” she asked herself as she went to her class and the day went on as usual which consisted of Noelle excelling in all of her subjects as she was naturally gifted at magic much to the jealousy of all the other students in the school and a few of the teachers too.

At the end of the day Noelle was tired from studying all the time and she wanted to just go home but she knew that wasn’t possible as she wanted to go to the library and look up more about how to summon a familiar even if she had read the book two to three times already, “Noelle” a female voice said as Noelle turned to face a beautiful elf with snow white skin and bright blue eyes with red lips and long white hair wearing a cream-colored robe, white pants and brown leather boots come towards her.

“Good evening Sylvia-sensei” Noelle said with a smile, out of all the teachers in the school she loved Sylvia-sensei the most; she was the most caring, beautiful and most talented witch in all of Magipolis and she also made it her personal mission to take care of Noelle and to make sure that she was happy here.

“How are you today?” Sylvia asked.

“I’m fine...I’m going to go to the library again” Noelle said.

“You still haven’t been able to summon a familiar yet?” Syliva asked in a tone that wasn’t accusing or that made her sound that she was disappointed...only worried and concerned, “You do know that in order to pass the final exam you need to summon at least one familiar.”

“Yes sensei” Noelle said nodded, “I know but for some reason none of them seem to be willing to be my familiar”.

“Then perhaps you have a fated familiar” Sylvia said.

“Fated familiar?”

“Yes, a familiar that fate has already given to you, one that you are sure to work with very well and where you will do great things with that familiar...perhaps that familiar is just waiting for you to call it.”

“You think so?”

“I do...so don’t worry your little head Noelle” Sylvia said patting Noelle’s head.

“Okay...I’ll be going now then Sylvia-sensei” Noelle said as she turned and decided to go home instead of the library, she was too tired to try and attempt a summoning anyways.

“Hey Noelle” Sylvia said as Noelle turned her head, “want to go and have dinner with me?”

“Really?” Noelle asked and when Sylvia nodded she cheered, it was a custom for Sylvia to treat Noelle to dinner whenever the young witch was down and it made Noelle love Sylvia more for it.

The two of them went to their favorite place to eat, a small cafe that served good quality food and the owner and waitress was friendly to Sylvia and Noelle, “Good evening Sylvia-san and Noelle-chan” Lucy, the young 25 blonde waitress, said, “here for dinner?”

“Yes Lucy-san” Sylvia said as she took a table for two.

“How was school today Noelle-chan?” Lucy asked she took their orders.

“Exciting as usual” Noelle said as she began to narrate her day at school as Sylvia went to the owner of the café Darium, the old former wizard of Magipolis but was now a caring owner of a small café, a far cry from his sortie in the magical world but it helped to pay the bills.

“Rough day at school?” Darium asked as he cleaned a glass before pouring one for Sylvia and giving it to her.

“Not today” Sylvia said pushing it away surprising the old man.

“A very rough day then” he said with a toothy smile.

“Not me” Sylvia said vaguely gesturing at Noelle.

“Ah…” Darium said nodding, understanding what Sylvia meant, “aye…she’s been having it hard ever since she found out she couldn’t summon a familiar.”

Sylvia nodded, “I’m not sure what I can do…she’s hardworking and very talented in all areas of magic except for this particular one…the only one that every wizard and witch needs to be able to do but no matter what she does no familiar wants to be even near her yet alone be her familiar.”

“Has she tried a force summoning?” Darium asked as he pushed a piece of bread towards Sylvia, “it’s not as pretty as most summoning but at least she’ll pass the exam until she can get a proper one.”

“Tried that once” Sylvia said as she took the bread and ate it, “but the familiar literally did everything in its power to break out of the contract; in the end Noelle had to break the contract before it killed itself.”

“Wow…I’ve never heard of a familiar fighting off a contract that desperately” Darium said.

“I’m worried Darium” Sylvia whispered to the old wizard, “I’m really, really worried about her…”

Darium put his hand on her shoulder, “You need to have more faith in her” he said smiling, “she is a wonderful girl and an exceptionally talented witch…I haven’t seen that much talent in an Academy graduate since-“

“I get it” Sylvia said stopping Darium’s words, “I get it…” before she sighed.

Darium pursed his lips knowing why Sylvia stopped him as he sighed and pushed the drink back towards Sylvia, “It’s been three years Sylvia…you need to move on.”

“He’s still alive” Sylvia said looking at Darium, “he’s not dead.”

“You were there Sylvia” Darium whispered, “I was there…we both saw what happened to him, how surrounded he was…how none of us could help him even if we wanted to…there’s no way he survived or he would be here with us, with Noelle.”

“Enough” Sylvia said in a tired voice as she shakily took the drink and finished it in one go as she groaned, the liquid tasted like blood…metallic blood at that but it was usually enough to make Sylvia forget most of her worries; however she looked back at Noelle and groaned to herself, “I forgot that I need to take Noelle back home…I can’t be drinking tonight” as she pushed the glass away and began to move away when Darium grabbed her shoulder.

“Lucy can take Noelle home…you need to stop worrying for a moment and just enjoy life” Darium said as he yelled to Lucy, “hey Lucy can you take Noelle home after she’s eaten her fill? Me and Sylvia need to talk.”

“Sure grandfather” Lucy said as she turned to Noelle and continued to listen to Noelle talk about magic and what she wanted to do after she graduated. Darium looked at Lucy and Noelle and smiled to himself, those two were almost like sisters, both willing to protect the other and listen to whatever the other had to say though more often it was Lucy who listened while Noelle chattered on about things that interested her, which was magic theories and spells while she often drifted off to other topics but only to drift back into magical theories, ‘Honestly…’ Darium thought, ‘that girl can only think about magic but then again she is his sister so that can’t be helped…if only he was here, he would’ve become the greatest wizard alive.’ Darium thought sadly as he looked at Sylvia who was already out like a light. It seemed whenever she drank that drink she would be out within 10-15 seconds, she wasn’t able to hold her drink down very well and she didn’t drink very often…only when she was thinking about him as Darium sighed and began to clean the glass, “Sleep well” he muttered to Sylvia, “old friend.”

So I'm new to this whole writing thing, but I have been an avid fiction reader for a long time. Hopefully this will be useful to you. If not, feel free to stop reading at any time :)

You have really great ideas here. You have a girl that needs serious magic help, someone close to her that died ambiguously (which sets a "hook" for the reader), an enemy, some friends, and a cool idea about something called a familiar. Those are great elements. I like that Sylvia attempts to help Noelle even though she obviously had something terrible happen to her, and she is still dealing with that.
I think something that would help these ideas come alive is to space them out. There is no shame in putting a few more paragraphs into why being late was such a pain, or Meredy, or what happened at school, or how Noelle met Sylvia for the first time, or any other details.
I'm guessing you have some revelations that come later that you would be loathe to spoil, but a few details helps me (as a reader) feel the full import of what is going on place. I felt like I was jumping between things so fast that I could not savor any of the major pot pieces.

Maybe don't say the word 'familiar' quite so often.

You have a real great start! good luck!
