Fate through the Demon's Hand

Fate through the Demon's Hand

A Story by Le Sapphire

It was afternoon in December, a day before Christmas Eve will arrive. Everybody was very busy; buying fruits, meats, chocolates, and gifts for their families and loved ones.  Jeepneys and cars  moved slowly. People are passing to and pro in different directions. "Jingle bell. Jingle bell. Jingle all the way..." Street children are singing Christmas carol hoping that somebody will spare even a peso to them.
"S**t! You, dump girl! Stay out of my way!" Alfonzo shouted in anger as he was about to bump one of the street children who walked across the highway.
When he arrived home, he lie down on his bed and fell asleep. He saw an old man sitting beside him.  "Hey! Young man, five years from now, you will marry the girl whom you hated most." Alfonzo tried to ask question but the old man gone away. "Oh, S**t! It's already 8:00 o'clock in the evening. My friends might be waiting for me."
Alfonzo rode in his red car and ran it as fast as he can. He went to his friends who are inside the Resto bar, the most expensive bar in the city of Iligan.
Laughter, rock music and deafening sound heard inside the room where they are. Sexy ladies are dancing with the music. Alfonzo and his friends have done drinking six bottles of regular sized beer. Of course he enjoyed but his dream bothered him so much. He wanted to know what was the meaning of his dream and he planned to go to a fate teller.
It was the third day after Christmas when he was sitting alone under the shade of the big Mahogany tree in front of his house. The sun will soon to sit after a few hours. The cool breeze brought fragrance like flowers in the early morning. Alfonzo was staring at the children playing happily at the nearby canto. Suddenly an old man caught his attention, came to him and said, "Young man, do you want to know about what your future will be?"    "Yes."           "May I see your palm?" "Have you remembered the girl whom you have bump last day?"          "Yes, I got angry with her."      "Mind you, after five years, you will marry her. Remember that."
"What! Me! Will marry that ugly beast on the street? You're telling a lie! Get away from me!"          "Prophecy will always come true. Remember that young man. It is hard for you
to accept the reality now but later on you will."
After saying that, the old man has gone away. Confusion filled Alfonzo's mind at that moment. He wanted to believe what the old man said yet he cannot accept the fact that he will be marrying a rugged woman.           "S**t!" he shouted in anger.
He can still see in his mind the appearance of the young girl; with curly uncombed hair, wearing dirty dress which seemed unchanged for how many months, walking with her feet alone, and begging for alms from the people passing by the street. What a miserable life for him.  He walked along the street one night, brought his sharpened six inches knife. He was looking where the girl was. He was actually planning to kill the girl. Meanwhile, he arrived at the back portion of the old church where people seldom to pass. He found the girl there and he never wasted his time. He stabbed the girl on the right portion of her back below her shoulder. He left the girl lying on the street thinking that she's already dead. A minute after, a couple riding in their black Hilux car passed through the road where the girl was. They brought the girl to the hospital. Since then, they let the girl live like their own child. They cared for her and gave her what she wanted. They send her to school. The rugged girl now became Ms. Charity de Guzman, the one and only daughter Mr. and Mrs. de Guzman, one of the known business owner in Cagayan de Oro City.
Five years later, Alfonzo and Charity are both enrolled at St. Michael's College, the best private school in Iligan City. That was on the first week of July when SMC celebrated its "Lambigit", the school acquaintance party. All the students were excited to meet new friends, as well as their new teachers. What a small world after all. Alfonzo won as the Mr. Fresh face (from the CAS) and Charity won as the Ms. Fresh face (from the CED). The attraction between the two of them began at that night. They both fall in love at the first sight.
On the next day, Alfonzo and Charity were eating their snacks at the canteen. They were talking and sharing their life experiences.
"Actually, I am not a real daughter of my Mom and Dad."
"How did it happen?"          "When I was twelve years old, I just spend my whole life on the street, begging a single centavo from the people...one night, I was sitting at the back portion of that old church, and a stranger stabbed me with a knife. Mr. and Mrs.de Guzman saved my life at that night."                    "What?"
Alfonzo was silent. He remembered the night when she stabbed the girl.
"You mean....never mind."
"If I will be given a chance to meet that demon, I will surely stab him as what he did to me.The knife is still under my safe keeping. I will use it to kill the demon. He is such a demon!"
Charity cried on Alfonzo's shoulder without knowing that the man whom she is looking for is just there right in front of her. Alfonzo felt the guilt. He also cried. He got confused. His conscience was running after him. Will he tell the truth and lose Charity? Or keep Charity with him and keep his secret forever?
If you were Alfonzo, what will you do?
