Already Over

Already Over

A Poem by Leah Elisabeth

I had given up

There was nothing left to do

I'd been working all on my own

Trying to stand apart from You

But now I see the truth

I know that I am weak

I'm sinking far below the ground

And I long to hear You speak

But it's already over

The victory is won

You stretch out Your hand

And the battle is done

I thought I was falling

That I couldn't climb out

But You were there

Through my fear and my doubt

I was so afraid

I was full of so much shame

Then You stretched out Your hand

And called me by my name

You clasped my hand in Yours

And held me tight

And now I'm safe in Your arms

And standing in Your light

And now I know

I never have to fight alone

Because You won the battle

And now I see

You were waiting for me all along

To claim that victory

In times when so many seem reluctant to express faith, this is refreshing and touching. Very nice job on this.

I don't know if I can give suggestions. I love writing poetry, but it is very hard work for me. It doesn't flow naturally for me, and I have to hammer and hammer away at it. For me, writing one poem is the equivalent of 20 pages of anything else. I'm sure your experience is quite different. I do find writing poetry to be well worth the effort, however, because of its intimacy. This poem of yours is very intimate. I guess my suggestion is to leave it here for a while. Go back to it when it no longer has freshness for you and you can look at it with a more objective eye. So much of your writing is intuitively poetic, Leah, that maybe you haven't had to learn how to work out perceived kinks. We could start a big dialog of how to wed the creative right side of the brain to the more analytical left side! There is something to be said for that!

Oh, a point of flow. Think of it as the flow of a river. Sometimes it undulates gently through green pastures. Other times it jumbles wildly over rocks or cascades suddenly over a drop. Sometimes it slows to a mere trickle. A poem can go the full range of a river, but like a river, it has a definite direction, even if it meanders. sometimes backtracking on itself, as it makes its way to the sea.

Powerful expression of divine deliverance and the hope that we never walk alone. Thank you again for such a renewing, life giving message through your beautiful words!
