You Have 2 Saved Messages (unfinished)

A Story by leahanne

“You have… 2... saved... messages.” The robotic voice spoke into her ear.

“First message,” it continued on-then a sudden change of pitch. A deeper, disembodied voice came through the phone.

“Hey.” The voice was scratchy and dry at first. A release of breath that seemed to have been held in for awhile huffed out. But the voice progressed.

“What’s up?” Silence. The breathing sounded hesitant and short. It was trying to keep the pieces together. It was trying to hold itself together but it failed. Everything shattered. The whir of a deep, heavy sigh rushed through the phone.

“Uh,” the voice croaked but lingered for awhile. Then suddenly a release of admission.

“I lost it…” The voice, muffled and trembling, forced the words to come rolling out.
“I just lost it…” The sound had become gentle and soft-spoken at the last word but then picked up.
“It’s one of those days,” it grew rough. “I f*****g lost it. I blew up.” A quiet whimper echoed in her ears.
Silence. The sound of shuffling around interrupted the quiet. But then a hush overcame everything. He was trying to think of the words to say. He had wanted to cry to her. He had wanted more than anything for her to comfort him. The massive amount of sadness weighed down his heart with all it’s strength. She could feel her heart beat in her head while she listened to the continuous hush. No words were spoken for what felt like an eternity.

“I’m having a hard time hanging on today and…” The voice trailed off. She gripped the phone tighter and held it closer to her ear making sure she didn’t miss a single sound. Her eyes flashed to the screen but the voicemail was still playing. It had not ended.

You've done a good job describing the man's voice, which is important because that's currently the only connection we have with him. His emotions come through well. That last line is the perfect place to stop, since it makes me want to read more!
