Meeting My Long-Distant Best FriendA Story by leahanneShe caught site of a familiar face. She squinted studying the features. Whoever caught her eye was standing alone and distant, surrounded by passing people. She couldn’t quite understand why their face had caught her attention. They were looking around, seemingly lost. Then Leah locked eyes with them and she knew exactly who it was. “Oh my god…” she choked out, then took off. She was full on sprinting as fast as she could in heeled shoes. He saw her coming and began to pick up pace in his walking. “BRANDT!” she shrieked. They both collided and the force blew Brandt back a few steps but he held on to her as tight as he could, her head on him. “My god…” he breathed. “Leah.” “This is really you,” she cried out and squeezed him tighter. “Yes, of course,” he sobbed. Tears leaked out of both of their eyes, streaming down one after the other and sounds of sniffling and sobbing were exchanged. Leah whimpered into Brandt’s sleeve as a smile remained plastered across his face. “I couldn’t find you,” came a muffled voice. Leah’s face was completely buried in his shirt, staining the fabric with tears. Time couldn’t make up its mind and slowed to a halt. People passing by were suddenly frozen. “Sorry about your shirt,” Leah laughed. “No, no don’t apologize at all,” Brandt chuckled. “I’m sorry for not showing up early. I… I just thought it would be the perfect time to show up after everything.” he explained. Leah lifted her head to examine him. “It’s okay.” she beamed then embraced him again. He had the overwhelming urge to lift her up and spin her around and give her piggy-back rides. She was small compared to him. He could smell her hair give off an aroma of creamy shampoo. It felt good to hug someone so close to him - the thought of letting go never crossed his mind. “You looked really great up there,” he complimented her. “You were here the whole time? You watched me on stage?!” “Of course I did. I was here from the beginning I just didn’t show myself until the end,” he laughed and she let out a laugh too. She wiped away tears from her eyes and couldn’t stop smiling. “I told you I would bawl.” She sighed into him. “Remember when I said we could break the record for the world’s longest hug?” she asked. He nodded, “I do remember that.” “How long have we been hugging?” she questioned. He checked his watch. “So far, about 26 minutes.”© 2013 leahanneAuthor's Note
