What you Wish For

What you Wish For

A Poem by Kristan Strietzel

“Be careful what you wish for,” Mama always said.

Oh, Mama, if I had only really listened.

I wanted to feel again.

I wanted to hurt – if that was all I could feel,

that's what I wanted.

If I had to fear to feel,

that's what I wished for.

Oh, sweet boy,

once removed from my own --

with your gap-toothed smile

and crushes on girls who don't understand you!

How dare that insidious... THING!

chew away at your leg

your youth

your life

like some demonic hamster

on a piece of lettuce.

I would never have wished this upon you

even if it meant I could feel.
