"

Mer is just a normal college student in 2061 just trying to make it. Not just for herself but for her impoverished family in a time of famine and shortage. But when supplies start dwindling to extreme amounts, all chaos erupts.

. My name is Mer, and i'm writing this journal for my English class at the University of New Sileina.  I am 22 years old, and I live in an apartment right above my best friend Eve's apartment. I've lived in New Sileina all my life, and i've sent in an application to the government to be transferred to a new city, but i've been denied. My mom says I will stay here forever, but I will not let myself believe that. I can't let myself believe it. I want to travel as much as I can, and meet new people.I always knew i wanted to go to college, but it is very expensive. My family did not have the money to send me, but I got a scholarship through my mathematical contributions to the university scientist's study of living on a planet in another galaxy. I have been offered a job to be transported to the planet to prepare it as a suitable place for humans to live, because we can no longer live on our planet because chaos has erupted. There is no more energy to power our lives. No more food or water. We are almost out of coal and gas, and the goverment has regulted solar and wind power so much, it's to the point to where it is too expensive to operate other kinds of renewable energy. Farmlands have been contaminated after the nuclear incident of 2022, and things have never been the same. On every continent, in every city, protestors are rioting and burning everything flammable. Just yesterday, Professor Hamurkai's car was burned. He was my partner in my studies, and I am very close to him. I hear Eve knocking at my door I think, so I must leave.

Today I will share disturbing news. When Eve came over to see me, she was in tears. The government has issued a declaration that everyone in her family is to be sent to the police for "questioning."    This ultimately means she will be executed.

"Mer what will I do?" She said, choking on tears and fear.

"You could run, hide away in the mountains."

"They would catch me, I have 48 hours to turn myself in, or they will come after me!" She half screamed. I could tell she was drained of her energy. I sighed, because I don't know what to do.

"Why do they even want your family?" I asked

"I don't have the slightest idea." She said, shaking her head.

"I'll call Professor Hamurkai, he'll know what to do." I replied. He always knows what to do in these situations. He has helped many people escape the goverment, and it is very obvious too. He has publicly detested the government, and I am so surprised to still see him everyday at the lab.

"Okay." she says wearily, dropping her head. As I pick up the phone, I hear someone coming up the stairs. Eve and I meet eyes within seconds, and I can tell she is alarmed.

"Eve," I whisper, "Go out on the balcony and go behind the bookshelf!" i whisper quickly, cleaning up the living space to try to erase all evidence of another person being here. I sit quietly on the sofa, awaiting a knock on the door. After what seems like hours it comes. I get up slowly, and make my way past the living area and through my small kitchen space. I take a deep breath, filling my chest with oxygen and I open the door. I immediately release my breath when I see the warm face of Professor Hamurkai. He smiles at me, and I invite him in. He is of asian descent, and I recall him telling me he was from a small country on the brinck of being conquered by New Hishona. He applied to be transferred to New Sileina to work at the university. He is only 26, and from what I hear he was a bit of a prodigy. At age 14, he had an I.Q. of 135, by the time he was 18 it was 160. Deep inside me, I've always been jealous of him. Throughout the time I've known him, he has always bested me. One time after he corrected a minor math mistake I had, I went back to my apartment and, out of the frustration that had been building for a while, I cried myself to sleep.

Author's Note

lavendargirl1
This is a rough draft, and I know it probably has a lot of spelling and grammar errors. It is also probably not very good, because it is the first time i've ever tried to write a book. I'm also in search for a better name and description for this, but that may take a while. I'm so used to writing poetry, that I feel like a fish out of water. So, constructive criticism is VERY much appreciated. Thanks :)
