A telly

A telly

A Poem by Lau Thiam Kok

I have moved house from one to another,
hunting for a flat that comes with a telly and a couch.
Now, I abide in one at last,
a twenty nine inch screen,
a remote controller, a DVD player,
a tape player, films, and
a big couch.

But, oddly, I still cannot be a potato couch
as I intended to be for such a long time.
Probably, in my vision,
I am still expecting a telly that once
you tried to ask around for me
and wanted to deliver it to my door
before you headed home for Christmas.

But, regretly, that night a flatmate of mine
did ahead of you when he left for home
and so I had to turn you down
before the winter howled.
However, I have learn from the telly in your heart
that Christmas is not to let a friend alone.
