Moved house

Moved house

A Poem by Lau Thiam Kok

Yesterday I moved house, leaving the place
that I have lived for ten months.
The old housemate drove me away, with my luggage
bumbling all along the road
to the new rented room in the attic of the new house.

And then, a friendly handshake,
a "see you around" and "take care"
we ended at the new door of the new house
which I will learn to know.
So, I locked it behind, walking up to my attic room.
Oh, how foreign you are in my eyes, my new dwelling.
But my old memory, suddenly came to haunt,
flung me out the room
down the staircase, out to the door again,
I wanted to see, I wanted to see,
an old face again, old and familiar once more,
Please! Please!

But all is gone, gone with the car that I came by.
Only the solitude biting a dark, cold night.
I see no more, I see no more,
The old familiar faces, the old familiar faces.
The wind howling, haunting
like a ghost.
