OHMMM-MY

A Poem by Larry Dyson
"

NEW WORDS: Navel, nauseate, dampen, kindred, perilous, raspy, recant

"

she contemplated her navel as her ancients -kindred had taught...

her stomach nauseated and her eyes beginning to cross...

recanting her mantras...for they came perilously close ...

to dampening the spirit of the verse...

she uttered in a whispy , raspy voice...

What, poets? Omphaloskeptics? Well, of course... it takes a fair amount of navel-gazing to come up with good confessional poetry... lol. And yes, i'd agree that it is so easy for some of us to get completely absorbed in the themes for these contests (not to mention the enticement of seeing our names in the awards list)... and maybe the poems are sometimes so contest-specific that they do lose some of the spirit of more spontaneous verse, though i don't think i've found myself going cross-eyed over them yet! :-)

The question is... did you add the 'NEW WORDS' afterwards, or have you really started with them and worked them into the poem? Either way, it's fun.

oo nice! you have a very unique voice in your works that I've not seen from others - it has a visceral and powerful feel - nice!

Perhaps you meant this as a humorous response to the contest, but there is a deep sense of someone seeking one-ness, despite the distractions of the physical self... nauseated stomach, eyes crossing etc.. Not entirely in keeping with the challenge but a very interesting piece of writing.

Thank you for entering a poem in the Sunday Challenge #5.
