Smokey CabA Chapter by Laurwal
"I'll be fine!" I sigh smiling into the receiver. My parents worry too much, it's only a three week camp. They start shouting into the receiver, calling out things that I made sure to pack.
"Okay honey, we love you!" My mother finally said. "I love you too mom, I better go though. I'm about to loose the call-" Sure enough my silver flip phone beeps. 'Call lost' it reads across the screen. I sigh and drop it into my lap and lean my head against the window, getting bored with the long ride. It's as if we were going to narnia. The cab drive let out a breath he might not have known he was holding, maybe not wanting to disturb my call. I gaze out the window not wanting to look at the foreign cab driver's nervous expression as the trees along the side of the road got denser and taller. The road looked pretty dark for the middle of the day. But streams of light flooded through tiny cracks between the trees throwing streams of light across the dirt road. The cab smelled like smoke. I tried to ignore this considering my mother smokes and I didn't want to think about how often I try to make her quit but she was hooked. I tried to warn her with how every cigarette brought her closer to death. She would simply reply that death was inevitable and every minute brings her closer to death as it is. I couldn't argue with that, but i still didn't approve. I barley noticed the path and the sign almost covered by shrubbery. "Look! There! Stop!" I say quickly grabbing at the door handle. The cab skidded to a stop and the driver looked at me with wide confused eyes. His turban pressed against the roof of the car in a way which made it hard to resist laughing and briefly wondering how he fit it into his car every day but I quickly brushed it off. "Uh- I'm here." I say pushing open the door. The fresh air hit my like flowing curtains. So clear but so there. I walk around the back of the car and grab my two big suitcases and my duffel bag. I quickly pull the black set from the yellow cab's trunk and grab some clothes that spewed out of the suitcases and stuff them into the duffel, which was filled with bathing suits for the lake. "Thank you!" I wave at the driver considering the cab was prepaid and I didn't know how else to dismiss him. I turned to the path as I heard his car turn around and speed back up the dirt road. Back to civilization. I ignore the smoke filled cab and take a deep breath. My college credits all lay within this camp. As well as some well paid for fun. My mother and father used most of their savings to send me here. They even had to dip into my college fund which we are hoping will be made up by any kind of scholarship that this camp could get me the credits for. I look down to make sure I'm dressed alright. Plain jean shorts that are folded up at the bottoms and sewn nicely. On top I wore my favorite. One I had gotten from a paramore concert last year. It was white with RIOT! written everywhere on it. I admired the t-shirt but anyone who didn't know the band didn't understand. I didn't care though. Even if it was random it was still creative and cool. I pull brush my fingers through my bangs which have grown mostly out to give a nice side bangs look that I've been styling since the sixth grade. I run my fingers down the length of my hair which is barley past my shoulders. Flipped up at the end to give a semi-retro look. I picked up my bags deciding i looked good enough and started down the path. © 2012 LaurwalAuthor's Note
