FamilyA Poem by Cherry Chapstickthis is from the point of view of someone who didn't have a positive family/childhood life (no kidding)Family As I walked alone all that night, I thought of all that it could mean To have a family That had really cared for me As much as they said they did— Hypocrites, they had other priorities. And I thought of all the families Out there today. So as I strolled in the dark, I thought I might just observe The dynamics and the lives of Family I happened upon A wealthy house The maid was their mother, The butler, more of a father, The parents so busy, There was no real life in them That their children could see. I happened upon A caring house The parents were happy The kids were helping It was the perfect harmony That is usually just a joke to see But it existed then and there And I wanted more than ever. I happened upon A poor house Crowded with sorrow And hardship. The family was separate, Each to their own worries, And no one leaned on the other For any sort of support. The last Was a no-house. The house where there is no real family Just fakes you learn to believe in. The kids were gone Like they were every night, The parents were working— Their main care in life. And that was where I had been All those years growing up; And that most people Will find themselves today. As I reached my dark empty house that night I reflected on what I had seen: Life means nothing Without relationships, And sorrow means nothing With love. And hardships mean nothing With a family for support. © 2009 Cherry Chapstick |
