With Or Without You

With Or Without You

A Poem by Laura Murphy
"

I felt a sense of betrayal by an old lover.

"

I close my eyes

But oh

Leave me with marks to show I’m yours

In the morning.

You broke me,

Twice,

And now once again I’m a work in progress.

An unfinished essay.

An unmade bed.

You made me trust you,

You made me love you!

All to get me into bed.

Well I’m done.

I’m a work in progress, but you are not the pen

You will not write my story

You are the smudge my morning coffee left on my paper

Now comes the afternoon, after you, after us

There was no ‘us’ really, was there?

You’re the real work in progress,

The unfinished essay,

The unmade bed.

And I don’t envy you because my story continues

With or without you.
