i rarely drink coffee past my morning two cups .. but i am prone to rising early .. many times 2-3 AM .. just a habit i have gotten into ... so the frustrations you so eloquently describe are not foreign to me arrrrrrrrrgh!
thanks for the chuckle your poem inspires in me .. and stay away from that night time java :)

Haha, I so know the feeling. It all starts off with late night studies or a nice little cup with the family, then you get addicted to that stuff slowly, then you start wondering if something is the matter with the coffee powder you're using, or if someone is trying to drug you. You look with suspicion at each face and each drink, never finding the culprit--that innocent looking, satanic coffee in that descent mug. When you finally pinpoint it out, it's too late.
I could almost smell caffeine in your poem, see and hear those heartless owls and hawks too, and feel the moon twisting and toying with my emotions like bits of toffee. Your rhymes have intoxicated me, miss!!! What a colossal masterpiece! I like Woody's poem too. My version would be
"Sweet brown cups of high-causing,
Sugared drinks full of loads of caffeine,
it's your mistake that I am here tossing
around in my bed even at three - fifteen. "--hmm, sounds awful, but I had to give it a try...
Ps, "Optical phenomenological shadows creep" and "Red lit numbers shift as lunar phases wane" --favourite lines.

I am one of the lucky ones, usually coffee later in the evening doesn't affect me like you describe. But tea for some reason does, much like you wrote about.
Well done. I related.

Oh, we coffee lovers certainly do enjoy our fix. During my twenty years in the Navy, we had coffee pots going 24 hours per day, and might not have ever accomplished a thing without them! "Optical phenomenological shadows"--I think I saw those on a few mid watches.

know the difference between a true poet and an interloper?
well, a true poet will express their sleeplessness with something as beautiful as the above.
an interloper (namely me) would write something as simple as:
coffee's coursing through my veins
as the moon waxes and wanes
I'm jittery and fit to howl
my eyes are like those of an owl

and all those sounds are even louder and more clear from the buzz of the caffeine ...but often the sleepless nights lead to writing...and then...not such a shame.
turn the curses to verses and have another cup.
