I had a pit bull named Buddah who, after a nasty spill on the ice, became paralysed. He could not move his hind quarters at all. When I brought him to the vet college, I was told that he would need surgery if I wanted him to live.
I spent the money I'd been saving to buy a house to help him, because there was no way I could have lived in a house that cost me my best friends life.
I was told that he would live maybe another year, even with the operation, and that the vet would rather put his own dog down than "waste" the money.
Well, he had the operation and he did die -- nine and a half years later. For all those years I gladly "did his duty" for him. ( I'll leave out the details of that chore!)
But he did not just lay around because he couldn't walk. I made a sling of a rolled up towel that I passed under his belly and he went almost every where I went, with me holding up his back half.
We even climbed to the top of a mountain in Colorado together.
Who ever brought the first wolf pup into the ring around the fire, started a relationship that has lasted for 100,000 years.
Dogs are our co-evolved soul mates.
They have visible whites of the eye, as do we. A trait not shared by wolves. Neither does any other primate have visible whites. This is because humans and dogs evolved as hunting partners.
Stealth is the hunters greatest weapon. When it comes to silently communicating with others in your hunting party, the eyes have it.
When one of my current pals, Tug or Chaka, come to me with a want, usually food, water or to go outside, I look them in the eyes and ask them what they want. My pit-bull (Tug) will slowly look towards the place he needs me to go, without turning his head, visually tracing the path with his eyes.
I believe that dogs, of all the other creatures not human, should be legally recognised as having the rights of a person. Without dogs, humans would not have evolved to be who we are. Just as they would not exist if not for us.

Even now, six years after Buddahs' death, when a memory of him passes through me, I can't help but smile.
Absolutely, CareCredit.com.

I agree with you. If I was in your shoes, I would have sprung for the surgery as well. Cancer is a wicked mistress, though. All giant breed dogs usually succomb to lymphoma. Once it gets into the lymph glands, it is malignant and metastic. I might have bought him another 12 months at best. But he would have had to suffer through several nasty months of chemotherapy. I don't agree with putting him through that. It broke my heart to let him go, but it was his time. Rowdy bear will always be with me.
Thank you so much for your kind commentary. It is obvious you enjoyed a very special relationship with your dog Tug. He was lucky to have you in his life. God bless you.
I should have added that, in the end, when Buddahs' body was failing and he was in pain, I did get him the help he deserved to pass.
As much as I wanted to keep him alive, that would have been a selfish act on my part. in the end, it's a decision I'm glad I made.

I know it doesn't help now, but you can buy pet insurance or a pet care credit line. Check CareCredit.com (we have their pet care credit line). It's very convenient and has an up to 6 month same as cash rate. I know how hard it is to lose a pet; they become part of the family.
When our old dog, Dingo, had to be put down -- he was around 15 years old -- even though I had not lived at home in five years, I wept for days.

He's such a majestic beast. I didn't realize before that giant breeds die much younger than smaller dogs, and many of them die of this horrible fate. I don't know if I can take another death so soon. I just got over mourning my schnauzer from Christmas before last. How much ache can one heart take?

Thank you, Momma!. I appreciate your kind and insightful words. God bless you...:)
i feel the heaviness of your pain Bright One .. so very sorry you are walking thru this difficult time with your friend ... we treat our "babies" better than ourselves many times ... i remember a young man at our neighborhood bar (i had stopped for a tall one before going home) i did not know him nor recognize him at all .. i sat with a stool between us (we were the only ones there besides the bar tender .. he struck up a conversation which ended in this grown man, in the presence of strangers weeping over the loss of his wonderful friend and companion (a black lab) ... we gain way too much from our "pets" than can ever be given back ... people who don't have the priviledge simply will never understand .. love to you! :((

Wow. So sorry for what is happening to your beloved dog. Dogs are not just the friendliest but they are so smart and observant of human intentions. I like your sarcasm about Obama's care to make one for dogs or animals in general. Here is the number to call: i-800 - white house...Just kidding to the last part... :)............
our pets are our children...
should be a pets market for insurance...obama pet care.
sorry you are going through this with your dog...
