Lost Days of Old

Lost Days of Old

A Poem by Bright Ocean Star
"

close to my heart

"

The night sky shone like diamonds cradled in a blanket of black shimmering satin.

The wind breathed gently, flickering leaves of the paper birch,

But halted at the sound as the dry stick snapped beneath his hoof.

Moist heat was violently expelled from his nostrils as he tossed his majestic head and

Ran free across the valley.

He was free.

Free to run and roam across the open range.

He belonged to no man.

He jumped and kicked, nipping a pretty coy mare in the butt, showing his affection.

The wide expanse of grass grows brown with draught, unseen in the black starlit night.

Swaths of dead grass and dirt stretch across the hills.

His days are numbered on these vast, open plains of freedom.

Soon his free, wild spirit will be tested against the whirr of helicopter blades and men in pickup trucks.

Soon the proud toss of his head and the majestic slope of his back will be introduced to saddle and bridle, and the proud, free green Mustang will be broken.

Time is changing; Days are waning.  The tick of the clock never dies.

Days of running, playing, biting and mating wild and free as the days of old are over.

We weep for the times of old, when horses ran free and cowboys rode herds across the plains, camped out with chuck wagons and slept by starlight.

We weep for the Wild Mustang.

Beautifully written, engaging all the senses, starting with a point of peace and ending on a note of rational perspective. You give a reminder, too, to the wise heart to appreciate the many diverse gifts of life and nature. Thank you!! and bless you, Bright Ocean Star!!

We weep for the Wild Mustang.

This was stunning I love animals and have a great
respect for the wild spirited Animals they run
with the wind like the Bald Eagle so much beauty and Grace you see God in each creation he's made I could never cage up a animal upon there own free will it's wrong
or take away it's freedom it is the same as man being power Hungry makes you sick.

I get to see blessings where I live sometimes there's a beautiful Owl
that perches on the tree near our bedroom window and hoots so peaceful
it's early in the morning when we are waking and I've seen a family
of brown Hawks near my mother and father in law's home quite Lovely.

Where are you originally born and raised makes me think
of my Mother she was born in Killeen Texas she was around
Bulls and horses my mother makes me think of the wild Mustang
my mother was a wild child :) and she has always had a compassionate
and loving heart for animals and helping others Since she is a Nurse :)
so I am a Northern from Cedar Rapids Iowa Raised by a southern Bell :)
that is funny but it is way I respect my Elders and I was raised on Christian Values
that's why I won't cuss but this really brought back Memories my great grandparents
owned a farm with cows and Chickens was beautiful and Huge I love the country more than
the city not a city girl but I am strong and tough :) By the Way my mom was a Cowgirl
she has boots so yes this makes me think of my mother :)

I have a free spirit if I am inside for too long
and don't get to rom outside and run free and smell
the sunshine and fresh dew air during the morning autumn
days or at anytime I feel like a bird trapped in a cage I get
cabin fever I can't stand to stay in doors for days and days
I love the out doors and the peacefulness of Gods beautiful
creations.

Thank you for sharing this was lovely penned
and thank you for your kind review and comments
you left on my page.

Blessings. Benita

This imagery you painted here was absolutely breathtaking Anne, I was captivated with the first line into this poem.... so gorgeous, that is one of the things I love about your poetry... i see what you craft vividly with my mind's eye. You have captured the free and wild spirit of the Mustang brilliantly and saddened my heart for the way it was broken by man. Wonderful, wonderful write! 100/100

I have a weakness for horses. I have never learned to ride but I could watch them for days on end. They have a beauty that we cannot possess and a knowing in their eyes... it tells about their souls. I like your story and I too could return to the ole days when we were all natural with nature.

Great write, the difference made by changes is projected and the reader sense it instantaneously, change is good but these type of changes pulls us away from the basics like freedom, dignity, not owned by capitalism and much more, enjoyed

Beautiful, Anne. All along my reading, unbidding images of a wild bronco kept popping up in my head. It's that good.
