Chapter 10

I woke up to find myself lying in my usual spot on the bed. My hand was laid on Matt’s bare chest, which was slowly moving up and down from his breathing. I picked up my head and saw that the clock said it was only 7:30. I wanted to sleep another hour so I set my head back down on Matt’s chest and tried to sleep as Matt slowly woke up.

“I know you’re awake, Faye.” Matt said, sliding his hand up my arm.
“No I’m not, I’m sleeping.” I pulled the blanket over my head and rolled on to my other side. I heard Matt laugh and the bed shifted with his movement. I came up from my little hiding and saw Matt walk into the bathroom to take a shower. I got up and grabbed some regular clothes and went down stairs.

When I got downstairs I started making me and Matt breakfast, scrambled eggs. While I was cooking the eggs, I felt really light headed and sick to my stomach. I decided that I shouldn’t eat and just gave all the eggs to Matt. While Matt was eating I felt really light headed and nauseas.

“Faye, are you alright?” Matt asked, finishing his and my eggs.
“I’m fine,” I set my head down on my hands, hoping it would help settle my stomach. My nausea finally got the better of me and I raced to the bathroom. Matt was quick to follow me and stood in the doorway as I continued getting sick.  I looked down and realized this wasn't normal vomit, I was throwing up blood.  Villains noramlly only throw up blood when they are first born and meant to be powerful.  I wiped my mouth with toilet paper and Matt walked over and sat next to me. I rested my head on his shoulder. He rocked me like a baby and I was still light headed.
“Faye, you should go upstairs and get some more sleep.” Matt said as he stopped rocking me.

My weird sickness continued throughout the entire week. Every day I was running to the bathroom and I felt terrible. I was more tired than normal and surprisingly my jeans weren’t fitting me right. Matt and I couldn’t figure out what was wrong with me. I decided to have Charlotte, the doctor at Villain Republic, see if she could figure out what was wrong with me.

“I have bad news for you Faye,” she said when she came back from a room.
“The bad news is,” Charlotte off trailed when she said that, her expression wasn’t good, more upset then anything.
“The bad news is that you have the Jitmakusal disease,” I had heard of this before, but I couldn’t remember where.
“What?”
“Jitmakusal is a disease that only Villains can catch. It uses up the entire toxin in your blood, and since the toxin is your blood, you die of bloodloss.  Doing anything can catch it, but there’s a one in a million chance of getting it. I’m sorry but, you only have five weeks."
“So you’re saying that, I’m going to die in five weeks?" This cannot be happening.

“Yes, I’m sorry Faye. If I were you, I would consider resigning from the villains now rather than risk your powers suddenly not being there when you need them.” Why do all the bad things have to happen to me? I don't want to die, I want to have a long, happy life with Matt.
“You’re kidding right?”

“Doctors never joke, Faye. You’re a great leader, but there’s nothing we can do.” I tried to make myself believe this wasn’t happening, that it was just a dream, but every time I opened my eyes, I was still in the lab.
“Is it normal for this to make you feel pregnant?”
“Yes, that’s what it does, even to men, it makes you bloat, nauseas, and lightheaded, loss of appetite, gaining an appetite, sleepy, and mood swings.” Charlotte explained.
“Okay,”
“One thing I don’t understand is why couldn’t we spot that you had this disease when it first started?”
“What do you mean?”
“Apparently you have had Jitmakusal for five months and if it was in the beginning stages it could be stopped, I wonder why we couldn’t detect it. Apparently you’ve had it since Christmas.”
“That explains why I pretty much ate my body weight that day.”
“Faye, if I was you, I would go home and lay down, I’ll do everything I can, I’m really sorry about this, I wish we found it sooner.”

When I got home Matt was waiting for me on the couch.
“What did she say?” I fought back tears as I tried to tell Matt my unfortunate news.

“I’m going to die.” I couldn’t hold back the tears anymore and Matt comfortingly hugged me. I sobbed into his shirt as I told him everything Charlotte had told me.

Matt was in shock that this would happen but he didn’t talk about it much. Matt picked me up and sat down on the couch with me on his lap. I continued to vent my loss of power but eventually stopped. I still sat on Matt’s lap and he continued to comfort me. I couldn’t think of anything worse than dying, except living without Matt.  I didn't want my life to end anytime soon, but there was nothing I could do.

I could tell that I was getting weaker. I wasn’t as strong as I used to be, couldn’t run as fast, I couldn’t levitate anymore, and everything I did hurt. Charlotte had told me she would try and find anything that would cure my illness, but she hasn’t found anything yet. One morning I woke up to the phone ringing. I leaned over the sleeping Matt and picked up the phone on his end table.
“Hello.” I quietly answered.
“Faye, it’s Charlotte, I have good news for you.”
“What!”
“I figured out how we can reverse your illness. I talked to another villain who had the same thing happen to him,”
“Who?”
“You weren’t alive during his time as a villain; actually he retired a year before your dad brought you in. Tarantula, you’ve heard of him,”
“He’s dead.”
“No,”

“Yes, I saw his bones in that old prison they put me in 11 months ago,”
“That wasn’t him, he could clone himself, just like the hero Gemini, he duplicated himself and his clone got killed, not him.”
“Oh, so what did he say?”

“He said that in order to reverse this disease, you must have a surgery that drains out the Villain toxin from your blood and then you must have a new toxin put in you.” Charlotte explained, sounding proud of her discovery.
“But if I have the toxin drained out of my blood, I could,”
“You could die, yes, but,”
“No buts, I overheard my dad talking about this surgery once, you only have a ten percent chance of surviving!”
“Faye, listen to me, this would be performed by me and trained professionals, you would have nothing to worry about.”

I didn’t answer her right away. I knew the risks of this surgery.
“Faye, this surgery is extremely vital, it’s either this or you lose your powers.”
“Okay, I’ll have the damn surgery.”
“Great, be here tomorrow at 11.” Charlotte hung up after that last statement. I hung up the phone and turned to see Matt sitting right behind me. I jumped when I saw him there. I hate it when he sneaks up on me like that.
“What was that about?” he asked, putting his arms around me.
“They figured out how to save me,”

“How?”
“I need to have a surgery, they’re going to clean my blood of the Villain toxin and give me more,”
“You’ll be fine,”
“Matt, I only have a ten percent chance of living!”
“Faye, you won’t die, you’re too strong to be killed by something like that, trust me, you will live.”

That night, I decided to go visit Villain Republic on last time just in case I didn’t survive the surgery. I walked up into the large black meeting room but when I got to the door I heard whispers and giggles.
“Shut up someone’s coming!” I heard a young female say. I quietly opened the door, but before I did I slid my mask on.

I opened the door and flicked on the light. I looked around and saw no one there. I walked around the entire room, looking for any signs of movement. I stopped when I looked at the wall that had the portraits of the leaders on it. I stopped and stared at mine, wondering if they would have put Infidelity’s up next to it. I continued my search and then walked out the door. I knew there were people in there, so I stood at the door with it opened a crack, and made it sound like I was walking down the stairs.

“That was close.” I heard a young male say.
“Yeah we could’ve gotten killed!” the female said. I slammed the door open and flicked the light on. I stood there with my arms crossed as I watched three teenagers, two males, and one female, stand there shocked. Both of the boys had black hair and brown eyes, and the girl had dirty blonde hair and blue eyes.
“What are you doing here?” I asked, anger in every word. The teens just stood there, not moving at all. “Why are you here?” I asked again. I walked over to them and picked up one of the boys by the neck and held him in the air. “Tell me why you are here, or he dies.”
“We were just having fun,” the girl cried “We climbed up the balcony wall and we wanted to see what it was like in here!”
“Don’t kill my brother!” the second boy cried. I looked at the one in my hand and threw him on the ground.
“Never come here again, or I will kill you.” They all dashed for the balcony door and climbed down the edge.

The day of my surgery finally came. Matt came with me and said he would stay with me the entire time.  We had to take my car because if you want to get in, the guards have to check for a small sticker of the Villain flag in your front windshield. Matt held my hand as we walked up the spiral stairs and into the black and red meeting room. We had to walk through a door in the meeting room that led to an all black hallway. After passing three doors, we finally reached the door to the lab. I took long breaths as my shaking hand reached for the black doorknob.
“Relax, it will be fine.” Matt said calmingly, I needed all the comfort I could get.

Matt opened the door for me and had to push me inside. Charlotte was waiting for me with five other doctors with her.
“Are you ready?” she asked, handing me a black hospital gown. I shook my head and reached for the gown. Charlotte helped me into the gown and then onto the bed where they would be performing the surgery.

Matt was sitting next to me as they hooked me up to what seemed like ten million monitors.
“We want to make sure everything is working right,” Charlotte explained, as she hooked up the electrocardiogram. You could tell I was extremely nervous because my heart was beating very fast.
“Relax Faye; you have nothing to worry about.” Charlotte tried comforting me.
“Except dying.”
“Faye,” Matt scolded, holding my hand as Charlotte drew on my arms, legs, stomach, throat, and forehead where they would be cutting.
“I don’t want to die Matt,” I wept, squeezing his hand.
“You won’t die Faye,” I felt a sharp pinch in my arm and my entire body went hot.
“Just count backwards from 100 Faye.” Charlotte ordered
“Matt,” I was nearly in tears because of how scared I was.
“I’ll be right here when you wake up,”
“Matt,”
“100, 99, 98, 97,” Matt started counting for me.
“Matt, please go wait in the meeting room, I’ll call you when it’s done.”
“No! Matt can’t leave me!” I begged. Matt placed his hand on top of mine, caressing it. “You’ll be okay without me, I’m just going to be out there, and you’ll be fine.”
“Don’t leave.” my eyes closed as my body was taken over by unconsciousness. I hope I will be able to open my eyes again.
