A Grand Daughter

A Grand Daughter

A Poem by Lasergraph
"

Written after the birth of my grand daughter. As is in the rest of my writing it is available on e-book on Kindle "Impressions in the Sand"

"

A Miracle came to me

     And took me by surprise,

With little hands and little feet,

     And little mouth and eyes.

I couldn’t help but wonder

      And thinking all the while,

If what I saw upon her face

      Could really be a smile?

A fragile sight, a helpless look,

       And needs she can’t explain.

All left for us to calculate

       If hunger, wet or pain.

A bundle that lights up hearts

Long since turned hard and cold,

And that is just a start of things

       She’s only eight months old.

All the changes we have seen

       Both grandiose and small,

With laying still and kicking legs

        Replaced with knees that crawl,

The changes come with greater speed,

         And even though not grown,

We can see her as she attempts

To do things on her own.

This is a great topic to read about, as I imagine how delightful it must be to live thru the experience (not ever having kids or grandkids myself). In places (ex: first stanza), the descriptions are a little flat & ordinary for me & could be pumped up with more imaginative word choices (little this, little that, ho-hum!) . . . to convey the marvel & wonder. The third stanza is the best, in terms of conveying the feeling of beholding this little wonder. Thanks for sharing your special joy.

I agree. I have three grand-boys. They keep me young and hopeful. A grandchild allow us to be better Grandparent than we were parent. We learn. Kids grow-up too quickly. Thank you for sharing the excellent poetry.
