Night

Night

A Poem by Chebem Ike

When the sun's erant is done
And the sky changes its silvery linen
For a darkly blue garment
And men from their work cease
When the birds slumber
But not the owl nor the bat
These seldom sleep

When the toad, the cricket and the owl
Entertain the world in a spell bounding
Rhythmic embrace
Then men's souls dance in the land
Of dream
To the rhythm of this nightly singers
Then the world listens in silence

But as the bat and the owl
Not all men honour this singular summon

These among others are:
The men of the underworld
Prostitutes in lighted houses
A deserted drunkard in a dirty gutter
Night travellers for good and bad meeting
Priests and doctors in soul and life saving missions
All in causeful and causeless erants

These people gor good and bad missions
Defraud you of this rhythmic songs in your dreams
Now you wonder why you never danced?

Despite all these, I love the night still
I love the night for in its embrace-
If its a starry night
When sleep is yet to call
My soul with my eyes are caught up in
The sky

Gazing and gazing at the glinting splendour
That is the stars and the silvery moon
Then I am lost in wonder so sublime-
This world my God, how wonderful your work
What lies above from whence these twinkles
And shines come

I love the night still for one more reason-
Cause of the night
I hold my day with kindly eyes
And work when I can
For the night must come
When I work no more

For then I gaze, I dream and dance in the
Embrace of the shinny silent and rhythmic night
