The day after the day

The day after the day

A Poem by Chebem Ike

Blue flowing sky
Blazing unruly sun
Conspirators
Mocking our mystified look
What a pretence!
Wa not this sky overcast
And this sun chased from its stand
Yesterday as the rain prepared
To perform its good and worrisome part?
Yesterday
When it seemed the world was
Coming to and end
Perhaps Noah's ark floated somewhere
I knew not
We scurried and jostled in for shelter
And struggled to stay closest to the wall
If not absorbed into the hollow carven
Between the blocks
As the rain fell in torrents
Like arrows in a spartan war
These arrows of rain struck
And destroyed: trees fell
Roofs caved-in and walls crumbled
The beggar-maid struck lay dead
Like leonidas hit in battle
Today!
The sky is bright and blue
The sun smiles and shines
But no amount of pretence can
From our aggrieved minds expunge
The memory of the great wrong
That the rain's incursion from the indigo sky
Did us here below
Yesterday!
