Searching for the Finish Line

Searching for the Finish Line

A Poem by Thorne_Alexandra

We were taken on ships to the land of the free
Because of Black skin that didn't include me
We were bought and sold like acres of land
So we can jump and run at the white man's command
The man himself then set us free
An emancipation, a piece of paper to me
Set free by law, but not by man
With the choice to cower or make a stand
Not brave but desperate we stood out ground
A new freedom is the gift that we found
We got what we wanted the freedom to be
But that wasn't enough for a man like me
The taste of ignorance was wretched and sour
For in this world knowledge was power
We horded all knowledge we happened to hear
And learned about lands far and near
Finally gathered the intel we needed
Me and my people finally succeeded
We were now in position to be of good use
To fight off the relentless white man's abuse
But power has a way of corrupting the mind
And stupidity took over our mankind
Future roll models turned petty and violent
The voice of the people suddenly grew silent
So our black men destined to be heroes
Now rot in boxes with the label of zeroes
We started this race with an intention to win
But lost sight of the line that marked...
the end
