Chapter 3: Nightmares

A sound woke Molly up from her dream.  It was coming from the barn.  She cracked her window so that she could hear the sound better.  The horses were what she heard.  It sounded like they were going bananas.

She looked at the clock beside her bed.  2:00 AM.  'I better go shut those horses up.' she thought.

She crawled out of bed and put on her slippers and bathrobe.

Molly walked down the creaky stairs and out to the barn.

The doors were open.  And as she got closer, she heard Uncle Earl yelp.  She peered around the door, afraid of what she might see.

What she saw was her worst nightmare, her uncle lying dead on the floor.  Hoovering over him was a man wearing a gray T-shirt and torn jeans.  He was covered in blood.

The man stood up straight and Molly got a clear view of his face.

It was Officer Jack.

Molly shot up in her bed, startled by her dream.  She was sticky with sweat and tears dripped down from her eyes.

She looked at her clock.  It was 2:00 AM, just like in her dream. 'How ironic.' she thought.

Even though it was a dream, she looked out the window to make sure that the barn doors were closed.

Molly slid out of her bed and went downstairs, into the kitchen.  She turned on the sink and splashed some water on face.  Then she took a glass from the cupboard and poured herself some milk.

She sat down on a chair and took a sip of her drink.

She heard the old stairs creaking.  Kenny came into the kitchen, holding a baseball bat.

"What you doin' down here, sis?" he asked as he set the bat down against the counter.

"I was hot and my mouth was dry." she lied, partially.  There were only two people that she would ever tell her dream to.  Her father and Luke. "What about you?"

Kenny poured himself some milk and then sat at the table with her.

"I heard a noise." he replied. "Thouht I'd better check it out."

"That explains the bat." she said as she eyed the long piece of wood.

"Hey Molls, can I ask you something?"

"Sure." Molly turned her gaze back to Kenny.

"Why did you offer to help the policeman investigate Earl's murder?"

Molly sighed.  She knew he was going to ask that eventually.

"I mean, you have nothing to feel guilty about." he continued. "Unless you were the one who dunnit.  But I doubt that."

"I did it 'cuz I feel like it's something I need to do.  But this has nothin' to do with guilt.  I dunno what it is."

Kenny chugged the last bit of his milk and then stood.  He put his glass in the sink and picked up his baseball bat. "Well, I'm goin' back to bed.  G'night sis."

"Night."

Kenny went back upstairs and closed the door to his room.

Soon after, Molly did the same.

When she woke later that morning, she did not feel refreshed.  She kept having that same dream, and each time she woke up right when she saw Jack's face.

She looked at the clock.  It was finally a reasonable hour to get out of bed.  She got dressed and put her hair in a ponytail, then brushed her teeth and went down for breakfast.

When she came into the kitchen, five people were sitting at the table eating french toast.  Kenny and Luke sat at the two ends of the table.  Her mom was sitting where Earl used to be, next to Aunt Lily.  Her seat near Luke was empty.  And on the other side of her chair, was a man in a  gray T-shirt and torn jeans.

It was Officer Jack, looking the same way as he did in Molly's dream.  The only thing that was different was that there was no blood on him.

Molly's knees gave way and she hit the floor hard.

"Molly!" Annie shrieked.

Luke ran to his sister and shook her shoulder. "You alright, Molls?"

Molly opened her eyes and looked around confused. "What just happened?"

"You fainted!" Luke told her.

"Oh yeah." she said as she sat up.

"Are you alright?!" a concerned Luke asked. "Did you hit your head?"

"No, I'm fine."

Luke breathed a sigh of relief.  He helped her get to her feet and took her to her seat.

Molly stabbed a slice of french toast, then put it on her plate and drowned it with syrup.  She began chowing down the food.

"Woah! Slow down, sis! You're gonna choke!" Kenny said, staring at her.

"Yes dear." Annie said, there was still some concern on her face. "And you must be polite when we have guests."

"Oh I don't mind.  The poor girl is hungry." Jack replied. He turned his head and looked at Molly. "So how about we start investigating after breakfast?"

Molly swallowed the food she had been chewing then said "Sounds good to me."

Aunt Lily looked at the two, curiously. "Investigating? You're gonna help him investigate Earl's...." she broke off.

"Yes I am, Aunt Lily." Molly answered.

Aunt Lily nodded and then went back to silently eating her breakfast.

Several minutes later, everyone finished their breakfast.

"Well Molly, it's time to go do some searching.  Are you still willing?" asked Jack as he put his plate in the dish washer.

"Yes.  Lets go."

The two headed out the door.

Well i'm just going to pour all my reviews of the previous chapters and the prologue into this one, so i hope you don't mind! :]
Okay, so one thing i found incredibly believable and just plain great is the dialogue between the characters, as well as their manners of how they speak. i can actually hear the characters all talking as if i were watching a movie or even being like a fly on the wall listening in to their conversations. Another thing that i liked was Molly's character, and how she expresses herself of how her interactions with other characters make her feel, and the vibe i'm getting from her is that she might subconciously know that her brother, luke, is somehow involved(?). maybe. i'm probably totally of track. lol.
the only criticism that i have to offer is that i'm not sure a police officer would jump at the chance to have a seventeen year old girl assist him in finding the murderer of her recently deceased uncled, due to some reasons such as possibly seeking vengeance, or maybe she wouldn't be able to handle it. but then again, this is fiction, so anything goes.
this is good, so keep writing and can't wait for the next chapter. :]

It makes me so curious to why Molly had a dream about Officer Jack to be the killer,
it brings me to think maybe he has something that he's hiding from everyone?
Hmm....
I'm so excited to read about them investigating and to what they will find out.
Man, I wish your chapters were longer, it kills me to have to wait even more.
Keep it coming, they're great :)
