The glass

The glass

A Poem by Lana

"Don't be afraid of me", cried out the dark night.
And yet a sword could cut throught my vein, at anytime
I am afraid of the mere existence of my kind
How could I ever run fast through this corridor
When I know I am headed to fall down into the pits of nothingness?
What could it all be for?
"Don't be afraid of me, or the darkness"
But tell me, what could it all be for?
"When you are stripped of growing wisdom on your face,
You must believe you go to a better place,
Or believe in nothingness"
It does not answer any of my questions, and I feel despair
Hatred of the world as it is
As it exists in contrast and nothingness
No good no bad
No moral compass pointing to south
No indication of life beyond Mars
I owe to know what's through the looking-glass
"I cannot give you the truth,
I can only tell you, do not be afraid of the dark
You run the corridors with your brothers and sisters
All rushing to get to the finish line
And fall down into the pits of life"

"into the pits of death" more like. :) Nicely painted woes of a restless mind looking for meaning in life. Here, if I might be allowed, I could add something not as an Art dabbler, but as an artless scientist: the good, the bad, if one tries to trace their meanings, one may inevitably be led to the conclusion that they are, even broadly speaking, social constructs, built so that we humans can stay together in society. That last word makes it rather dependent on our social-animal nature, ie. the wish to be merely dependent on everybody else around us. And this conflicts cruelly against the inclinations of a thinker, hence, I think, the supposed contradiction. We, on the other hand, oftentimes enjoy our investigations so much---and I have no wish to sound saintly here, I really mean chemical pleasure---that the act of proving a theorem seems of greater importance than the theorem itself; and once proven, the pursuit remains as a pleasant memory. The upshot of all this is that, may be the corridor ain't that dark? May be what would happen after reaching the end is hardly the point, and words like "good" or "bad" are seriously incompetent in contemplating the answer in any case?

I do beg your pardon if I hurt some sensitive spots being so blunt. But may be those spots themselves are not you (my reader), but something cruelly implanted since childhood?
