The Prisoner

The Prisoner

A Poem by Tai Ryens

In my mind exists a prison,

Two roles, a jailer, a prisoner, played by I;

The jailer is soulless while he tortures the other,

Heeding no attention to the painful cries.

But what has the prisoner done wrong?

He has been nothing but optimistic;

Could he have just been an innocent,

In the hands of a cynic?

Whip follows whip, the jailer shines no mercy,

For every ounce of inflicted pain gains him wealth,

However, no one knew that he had no glee,

He knew that in some strange way, the prisoner was himself.

Yet, he did not hesitate with any strike,

In a cruel way, harming himself brings him pleasure,

Therefore, he continued to inflict agony,

Distress was the flaw, but it was also his treasure.

This world in my head somehow made sense;

But who else could comprehend this intricate form of bliss?

Exploring our dark side is never easy. We tend to torture our own selves in over thinking, questioning and being over critical. Somehow, we emerge and see the wealth we possess...Your talent is the prisoner's key..use it to free yourself..This write was indeed intense.

It was beautiful! :) The words flowed weill together and it had the feeling of bringing yourself down but knowing you're better than that anyways :) I could connect well with it and I could feel the pain and euphoria pulling together and apart at the same time:) It short I love it :) It was one of the best things I've read

Very well written and thought provoking poem. The take on the different sides of the mind and the beauty yet torture, I love this one. How one can torture themselves and somehow seem to recognize that it was exceptional, and what one thinks may be beautiful and helping adn perfect, or they do it to sooth, can also be what's inflicting them pain. I love how detailed yet broad this was so it's easy to connect with and was well thought out with a great flow and rhyme scheme. AMAZING!

The implication of masochism portrayed by the two characters has been vividly shown. The setting of your poem is unique in the context that the imprisonment of mind is something that is overwhelming and formidable. The concept of hurting oneself psychologically elicits self-pity to find importance of oneself, according to my theory. It elucidates the answers buried deep within the mind. The reflection of this underlies the meaning of the poem, according to my thoughts. It's honestly a lovely piece of art work!
