Weightless Anchors

Weightless Anchors

A Poem by Tai Ryens
"

Since when have oxymorons made sense?

"

Why must I look back and see

not a thousand legionnaires imitating my tracks

but rather a thousand devils

tracing my footprints

~

Wandering about an endless ocean

drifting amidst whispers of a gentle breeze

heaving forth the anchors chained to my feet

yet I do not find it difficult to walk

I wonder if weightless anchors are similar to Blake's mind forged manacles, philosophies we have created than imprison us mentally. Could I suggest in the second stanza, the ship rather than the speaker is drifting endlessly and though dragging an anchor moves about freely. We understand this as a metaphor for the speaker's condition. The first stanza is rich with possible interpretations and I'm intrigued by the choice of legionnaires.
