San Marco

San Marco

A Poem by Neil Mukherjee Esq.

San Marco

Amidst the Venetian canals

two ex-lovers cross

a lonely bridge

from opposite ends.

This broken couple

steal only a

moment’s glimpse.

But each second

they take, in passing by

 is like an eternity’s time

floating away.

Soon they go

their separate ways,

moving and drifting

carelessly.

Afraid to feel , he and she

choke their voices of

desperate pleas within.

Where is their honour?

Where are their smiles?

The bond that was once

so strong, broke

chain by chain,

link by link.

Till everything in

their hearts and

in their souls

cheated them of

a moment’s word.

Bright was the night

a perfection of

moonlit beauty.

They cross the bridge

of San Marco,

never to return

to the city of

lover’s dreams.
