Downstairs at the party Noah stayed only because it was family obligation. Feeling drained and tired, he sat in the corner and sipped champagne quietly. For once his mother didn’t pester him to dance with any of his sister Kirsten’s single friends, because she actually believed that he was now married too. Kirsten didn’t pay any attention to his silence, caught up in her big day but she would find out soon enough and she would know it wasn’t true. She knew him too well and he wasn’t sure what excuse he could use after their lie was blown to keep Khya here. The thought suddenly occurred to him that she would properly have to work soon too, what if she decided not to come back. The thought made him quake; who would look after her then, what would he do, how would he look after himself? He liked the idea of having some to love all for him self. He didn’t mean to seem selfish; in fact he didn’t think it was being selfish because they could share the love if only she wasn’t too scared to love him back.

Leaning back in his chair he tipped his head to the side and looked out at the nearly set sun, trying to push all thoughts of Khya from his mind. The music stopped momentarily between songs and Kirsten found her way to his side to get him to dance with her. She stared at his tense face and wondered what he was thinking about to upset him so on her big day. Realising she was stood here Noah looked up gave a forced smile.

“Come to make me dance?” He asked and she smiled back and took his hand in way of answer. The music started again and they moved together onto the dance floor. He felt old and protective, as if she was 5 again and he was 9 and had to protect her from the rest of the world. “I can’t believe you’re married, my little sister.”

“I’m not that little, I’m 23 now and you are 30 this year, so I’m surprised Mum hasn’t been make you dance with various bachelorettes. Although if I’m to understand her babbled revelation to me earlier, am I to believe you got married without telling anyone, including me.”

“Yes, but its your special day so if you come round tomorrow before you leave for your honeymoon I’ll explain everything and you can met her.”

“I thought she was here.”

“She was, but she wasn’t feeling too good so she went to bed.”

“She’s not one of those weak sissy women who can’t do anything for them selves is she?”

“NO!” he objected. “She’s one of the strongest people I’ve ever met but she’s had a hard life and today reminded her of just how hard.”

“Can you explain more?” he shook his head, which she accepted gracefully, not being one to pry or gossip. Kissing her on the cheek they stopped dancing and Kirsten glided away to see to her guests while Noah retired back to his corner. It was late when the party finally ended and Noah stumbled up to bed exhausted.
