Aidan drove fast and in silence, occasionally muttering to himself. How had Melody gotten mixed up in his twisted family life? He screeched to a halt next to the house and leaped out, fumbling to find the right key on his key chain in the dark. It was dark inside as well. They must have gone to bed knowing he was coming. Even just two hours sleep properly would have helped them calm down a bit. Padding up the stairs as quietly as he could he went straight to Ginny’s room and sat on the edge of her bed.

“Ginny sweetheart wake up I’m back.” She mumbled sleepily in protest for a moment and then sat up quickly like some one had stuck her with a poker.

“Aidan! Oh I’m so glad your back. Melody was great but now you’re here everything will be fixed.” No pressure then he thought smiling at her though.

“Speaking of Melody where have you put her?”

“In your room.” She replied matter of factly hopping of the bed.

“Ok, you get dressed I’ll go wake her up.” Aidan's head was reeling at the thought of Melody in his bed. Stopping at the bedside he watched her sleeping for a moment, her blonde curls strewn across his pillow. It was more tempting to kiss her now then it had been when he had been straddled over her on the ice. He lent over her slowly… brushing a curl from her face, he woke her gently. She came round slowly to start with, then her green eyes opened wide in panic.

“Dougie, is he back?”

“No, not yet, but I hopefully have an idea of where to find him. Come on get dressed.”

Melody leapt out of the bed, completely oblivious to the fact that Aidan was staring at her bare legs and her barely hidden underwear under his t-shirt.

“Is that my t-shirt?”

“Umm yes,” replied, blushing brightly as she looked down for the first time. Trying to distract him she kept talking. “It’s good to see you again by the way. It was a surprised to find out that you were Dougie and Ginny’s brother though.”

“How do you know them anyway? I think you have time to explain now.”

The trio sat in the kitchen, all looking very serious but interspersed with yawns. Melody and Aidan drank strong coffee, while Ginny who hadn’t yet gotten used to the bitter taste drank coke. Caffeine and a plan was all they needed.

Aidan had rooted around in the top of his mums wardrobe and come out with a box. He dug through the box until he found a leather filo-fax.

“You have seen this before haven’t you?” Ginny asked looking upset at the sight of pictures of their dad and other things belonging to him.

“Yes and Dougie must have to I think. Mum showed it to me when I turned sixteen but she decided that Dougie needed to wait longer until he was more sensible, until he was eighteen. But he must have found it before then. I looked at all of dad’s contact back then, but never actually spoke to any of them. But I remember properly only a couple of them still lived here. Two had died and one ran a bar downtown. I think Dougie went bar hopping.”

Ginny started to cry again and Melody stared at Aidan appalled.

“This isn’t good anything could have happened to him in that area of town. How will we find him?”

“I’m sorry Ginny,” said Aidan giving her a big hug, “but we’re going to leave you at Mrs Thompson’s first thing in the morning and we’ll phone the school too. Then me and Melody, if she will come, will search for Dougie in the daylight. Now I think we should try and get a couple more hours sleep before we do anything.”

“So long as you find him, I’ll stay here,” sniffled Ginny wiping away her tears as Aidan ushered her back up the stairs to bed. Sighing heavily Aidan poured more coffee and dunked in a chocolate biscuit.

“I’ll stay and help. I’ll phone the school for you in the morning too; I work there so they will accept my word that there is an emergency and excuse Ginny and me for the day.”

“Thank you,” they sat in silence for a while, munching on biscuits and sipping the hot coffee. Aidan stared into his cup, frowning seriously, his eyes bright with concern and worry. Melody watched him and for a moment could picture him when he was younger; maybe watching his brother trying to climb to the top of the climbing frame and being about to fall. It would take everything he had to stop it from happening; to get there in time. She wanted to hug him, so getting up she wrapped her arms around his neck from behind and hugged him tightly. The sudden move made Aidan stiffen in shock, but he quickly relaxed into it. Spinning round he hugged her back, smiling slightly.

“Thank you Melody. Really thank you I’m not sure what our family did without you before.”

Mel blushed and pulled away, embarrassed by his compliments and her hugging him.

“We haven’t found him yet. We should properly try and sleep too.”

“You’re right. I’ll be on the couch if you need me.”

“Why?”

“Well you can have my bed. Dougie’s room is a teenage biohazard and Mum’s bed isn’t made up while she’s away.”

“Oh but your bed is a double isn’t it?”

“Yes but… would you mind if we shared?” he asked hesitantly and struggled not to collapse when she shook her head. They could share, she didn’t mind.

Taking the coffee cups and putting them in the sink, Aidan then followed Melody back up the stairs to his room. They turned their backs on each other in silence in his room and started to undress; almost like they had done it hundreds of times before. Melody was facing the only mirror and blushed as she caught sight of Aidan in various states of undress. She pulled on his t-shirt again over her underwear and when she turned around he was in black boxers and a tight grey t-shirt.

“Which side of the bed do you want?” he asked softly looking away from Melody’s blushing face and at the bed. She followed his gaze and blushed more, her stomach doing somersaults. Her first time in bed with a man and it wasn’t her wedding night like she had planned.

“The edge not against the wall please.” Just in case she needed to run away, she thought silently. Aidan nodded; he knew why she wanted that side and fair enough. Pulling the covers to the side he slid across and turned towards the wall. Melody hesitated then climbed in next to him and lay facing the other direction. Aidan dozed exhaustedly almost straight away feeling comfortable next to her. Mel however laid there awake stiff and tense. But as soon as she realised he was asleep she couldn’t help dropping of to sleep.
