Chapter 6- Whats Happened to DougieA Chapter by Julesoh dear where has he gone and an unexpected character returns
~ “Oh Ginny I’m sorry I was sure he would turn up soon.” Melody said softly holding the other girls hand as she let them into the dark and empty house with the key they had gotten from a sleepy neighbour. She hadn’t been too happy to be woken up at midnight unfortunately. “Something dreadful must have happened,” Ginny wailed as Melody guided her into the family room. “I can’t make you go to bed when you are in this state, se we will just have to stay up together and wait for him.” “Thank you Mel,” Ginny curled up on the sofa next to Melody, glad to have someone reassuring to lean on. While Ginny sat there in silence watching the clock go round, Melody was doing some serious thinking. Who did she contact if he didn’t turn up by morning? Their mother she supposed or the brother. The police would be no use they only worried after two days, not just one night especially when it was a teenager. Over an hour passed as she tried to decide what to say to them. Ginny’s head dropped against Melody’s shoulder as she fell into an exhausted sleep. Carefully Melody laid her down along the sofa and tucked a pillow under the head. Looking around Melody eventually was able to find a phonebook on a neat shelf. Now she just needed to work out who she needed to be calling. The brother seemed like the best bet but she didn’t know his name and she didn’t want to wake Ginny up to ask her. So she started to explore her surroundings a bit more, trying to see notes or anything with a name on of her to work from. Some pictures in silver frames on the mantelpiece caught her eye. Most were of Ginny and Dougie, together and alone. There was also one of a smart looking woman with dark hair and a serious face in a business suit looking fondly at a small Ginny. There was only one more with a person in she didn’t know, of an older boy scowling at a laughing Dougie, but he was quite far away and she couldn’t make out much. Ginny touched her arm silently making her jump. Melody hadn’t even realised she had woken up. “Here is a better picture of him.” She told Mel handing her another photo from the coffee table. He was much older in this photo and wrapped up warmly as if for winter including a colourful red scarf. But the one thing that stood out to Melody was the startling silver eyes that stared out at her from under black hair. It was Aidan. “What is it Melody?” asked Ginny, concerned by the shocked look on Mel’s face. “Nothing to worry about hun, I just realised that I know him and it surprised me that’s all.” “You know Aidan, how?” “We met once when I went ice skating and he tried to teach me. I didn’t do very well and then I had to leave.” Actually she had run away but she wasn’t going to say that. “That sounds like Aidan,” Ginny replied smiling slightly. “He loves the ice. And now he gets to spend even more time on it. He’s left to play pro hockey, his first game is in a day or two.” So that’s where he had gone, Melody mused and then she asked, “Can we phone him?” “Yeah he always makes time for family however important a game might be. Do we need too?” Ginny suddenly asked looking worried again. “I think we ought to, just in case. Can you find me the number?” Melody asked trying not to panic her. Ginny found the number quickly; she obviously knew where to find it and punched the number into the phone for Melody, handing it to her while it rang. “Hello?” Came the sleepy sound of Aidan's voice down the line. “Hello?” Came his voice for the second time and Melody froze. Ginny watched her curiously then nudged her just before Aidan repeated himself a third time. “Umm, hi Aidan it’s Melody.” There was a long pause. She could just picture him sat in a dark hotel room running a hand through his dishevelled black hair as he tried to work it out. “From the ice skating rink?” he asked puzzled. “Yeah, thanks me,” she laughed nervously. “How did you get this number?” he was starting to sound annoyed. “From Ginny, you see there has been a slight problem.” “Problem!?! And how do you know my little sister?” “Dougie introduced us, today in fact and don’t bother about asking how I know him, that’s not important right now. The important thing is that Dougie is missing. We went for ice creams together and he asked me to look after Ginny while he met someone and he never came back. We’re worried.” “Who?” “He said someone who knew your dad.” Aidan exploded at the other end of the line. “The little idiot, I told him not to poke into the past. That no good would come from it. I’m coming home, I might have an idea about where he is- I hope. Tell Ginny I’m on my way and that I love her.” Melody had barely mumbled ok when he had hung up. Ginny looked at her expectantly. “He says he loves you and that he’s on his way home. Although he didn’t say how long he would be.” “Not long I expect,” Ginny replied cheering up a bit. “He drives like a loony when he’s mad and he’s only playing a couple of hours away, so he maybe an hour and half or so.” “That’s good,” Melody said weakly, sinking down onto the sofa. Ginny sat next to her. “You look tired maybe we should go to bed.” “Bed?” that sounded good. “Yeah, I’ll sleep in mine and you can have Aidan's its right next door. And there is nothing we can do until he gets here anyway. He can let himself in too.” Where had this girl become so grown up? It seemed she was more sensible then Melody at the moment. “Ok lead the way.” She gave in and followed Ginny up the stairs. “In here,” she switched the light on in a large blue room and opened a drawer. “Here you can wear one of his t-shirts to sleep in so your clothes don’t get creased. I’m in the room to the right. Sleep well.” “Ok,” Melody sat on the bed and Ginny went to her room. Leaving Melody alone. She was in Aidan's room. It was the weirdest feeling. It felt even weirder when she had undressed and was laying in his bed and just his shirt and her underwear. A good weird though, like she could get used to it. Melody hit herself mentally. She couldn’t like Aidan. But she did. She groaned and rolled over and fell straight asleep, thinking this pillow smells nice, a clean woody Aidan smell she supposed. © 2009 Jules
