The Pink Ribbon

The Pink Ribbon

A Poem by laceyjane23
"

I wrote this poem for breast cancer survivors, in particular my grandmother, because they are living proof that early detection is the key to beating this disease.

"

" Our greatest defense in this battle is early detection."

She stands in front of the mirror,

looking at her chest.

The tears fill her eyes,

at the thought of just one breast.

Her mind begins to wonder,

about the things she used to be.

About what she would become,

and what others might see.

Will she still be beautiful?

Will her husband still hold her tight?

Will she still make people smile?

Or will she cry every night?

Is she still a woman,

even though she's lost a part?

Is she still strong,

with a broken heart?

With all the pain she feels,

through all the tears she cries.

Her mind stops wondering,

she begins to realize.

She is still a woman,

now more beautiful than before.

She is still a mother,

who now lives on to be more.

She will still make people smile.

Her husband will hold her tighter.

She will beat this disease.

Because she is a fighter.

Of all the choices she made,

she knows this one is best.

She will live to become an old woman.

Because of the pink ribbon...

Pinned upon her chest.

This really brings tears to my eyes, mainly because it is so caring and loving. So much tenderness went into this to bring attention to early detection. You remind me also to wear my pink ribbon to work (hospital) everyday to remind someone. My heart goes out ot you, this is so beautiful. I hope you are in turn blessed by the feelings you have for others.

I have a tear on my cheek as I write this. Thank you for being willing to write about something so may people would ignore. Bless your Grandmother for refusing to give up her identity as a woman in our society obsessed with perfection.

This is so beautiful, it made me cry. The fear and dread of this horrible predator called cancer can cripple us or make us fight. Give your grandmother my love for her endurance and example for all of us fearing, caring and surviving. Thank you.

What a wonderful poem! My mom has survived breast cancer for almost 10 years but as of recently it has returned in the opposite breast as before and there is concerns about a mass in her colon. She will get through because she is strong but also because everything is contained for the most part.

This poem amazes me! I'm going to show my mother as soon as possible. She will be delighted!

awwww! *sniffs* that is really beautiful sweetheart, it's not particularly hugely dep but sometimes it's better to have something that just clear and caring, which this obviously is, so you don't have to dig round for a meaning- and it's a good one to :) it like makes sense to ryme you haven't just done it because you feel like you should and awwwwww it's really just.. NICE :) (even though that word is banned) it's just so loving and obviously well considered, and you stand for every woman out there who has ever faced and beaten cancer! :) xx
