Four Candles

Four Candles

A Poem by Amy Carrington
"

I found this in a bin of papers from 7th grade. *sniffle* Oh, nostalgia.

"

In a simple little cottage

There was a truly simple sight;

Four white simple candles

on a table, giving light!

Together they made brightness

but alone, each flame was weak.

Yet if you listened closely,

you would hear one start to speak.

"I'm Kindness" the small candle said.

"I help all those who come to my door,

but why should I still be here?

No one is kind anymore.

People cheat and people kill,

Charity is now a joke!"

With those final anguished words

the tiny flame went out in smoke.

As Kindness quickly died,

His light with darkness was quickly replaced.

The candles stood in silence

Until one said "I'm Faith".

"I'm Faith, but tell who has faith

When Kindness is now gone?

Who beleives in a man

with a heart as cold as stone?

There is no faith in this cruel world"!

Faith began to shout.

And just as his brother, Kindness.

Faith had too, gone out,

Two candles left, two candles lit,

Faith and Kindness dead.

The third candle began to speak,

"My name is Love", it said.

"When Kindness and Faith are long far gone,

nobody trusts each other.

And without a solid feeling of trust,

no one an love one another!

Love used to be imprtant,

But people began to stray..."

The candle ended his swan song

and quickly faded away.

The room by now was very dark,

But that darkness had one blight;

For weak as it was, it still was there!

One candle still shed light.

A child, not yet even five

walked into the room,

and instead of seeing radiance

just saw the black and gloom.

"The candles are all out!" She said.

A sob escaped her throat.

But there was still one candle lit;

"Don't cry!" it said. "I'm hope!"

"I may be weak, and I know I'm frail,

but I think I know what to do.

If you give some of me to the others

they'll light again, as good as new!"

Wide-eyed and very silent

the child gently graspcandle, who's flame

when placed against their wicks

helped the others burn again!

No matter how dark the world may be

hope will always be nearby.

And with it, Kindness, Faith and Love

will never truly die.

Wahaha! You're right about the title! Now you know why I'm on a writing site and not a math one. Thanks!

You did this in seventh grade? Well done. Shouldn't the title be "Four Candles" though? This was well done (especially for the age you were when written). I am highly impressed. Reminds me of the old Pandora's Box story a bit. Great work.
