When You Pen A Poem

when you pen a poem

is it superficial or

does it expose your soul?

are you afraid to lay open

the depths of your heart?

Today there seems to be

a shortage of authenticity

something substantial

and real from your spirit

to engage the spirits of others?

Does it speak of joy or pain

is it heart poetry or merely fluff

are you afraid to pen

a true exposure of who you are?

do you know who you are?

The thing you fear to say

is the thing that needs saying

if you have a poetic gift

break all the chains

and dare to set it free
