It was a little early in spring for a bonfire, but this could not wait. Semi-frigid air swirled around the red and orange tower over the tall pile of beach wood, paper plates, half eaten ears of corn and whatever else we threw into the bonfire pile. We sat in a ring around the fire, a bonfire ring, just a bit too early in the spring. As I walked around the fire I had started, I kicked a few more half eaten plates of s****y bonfire food into the base of the wood pile, and I was looking at my feet as I bumped into you - you had your arms crossed, and the way you were walking could only he described as 'storming off,' and I bumped into you somehow. I heard a quick chatter of your teeth and I immediately offered you my hoodie. "Here," I said, siting down on a log we were using as a bench in the ring, and I laid my sweatshirt over your arms and lap. You thanked me. Smiled. But it was halfhearted, not a really smile like I usually got from you. "What happened?" "Erich and I are done." I didn't know what else to do and in retrospect I was not sure if it was the right idea, but instead of saying somehing, anything at all, I just wrapped my arms around you and let you bury your face into my shoulder. I hate myself a little, because even though you were hurt and that killed me, I was happy that I got to be your hero. I liked being able to help you and then I saw Erich strutting back from behind a dune wearing a northface jacket and clearly not as cold as his ex girlfriend - he hadn't even thought to offer it to her, I'm sure. I look up at the stars, and you look up too with your grey eyes, and I see Casseopeia twinkling in your irises. I hug you tighter and mentally promise to you and I that I won't leave you alone as long as you want me around. "Want me to do anything for you? Get you anything?" You say, "It's alright, just don't leave me alone." Like I would ever. As Erich sits down on the other edge of the bonfire ring, I can barely see him through the towering flames. Your tank top strap looks ripped, you're pissed, and I'm finally putting two and two together. Am I selfish that I thought, now! This is my chance? I turn my upper body to grab my guitar which is behind the log we're on and you untangle yourself from my arm but still rest your head on my shoulder as I start playing - the fire crackles as I pick a minor chord and start a song.
A little early in Spring for a bonfire ring She's shivering alone. I bumped into you somehow. Well, you can wear My duct-taped vest it's a party vest it's really all I own everything's changing now And I am high like a star that's flying Cassiopeia Everything's changing now She said it's alright She said no don't die alone, There's no goodbyes.
Lightning comes and lightning goes And it's all the same to me (Comin' to get you) Let it in Cause i want you so I can hardly breathe or release (Comin' to get you, too) Into one thousand pieces I have broke into Over you (Comin' to get you) Night's shade will soon be gone, I keep burning on and on and on
If nothing else I am myself, that's all I have to give Everything's changing now. Oh we could live like kings We could take a risk We could live in doubt (whoaaa) Everything's changing now oh now come on come on, and

It happened very, very quickly. You grabbed my neck with one hand and the neck of my guitar with the other, interrupting me, and threw the instrument into the sand, pulling me towards you and then you kissed me and pulled me into a standing position and continued to kiss me, lips overlapping, everyone watching. Everyone watching. Seeing this kiss. The thirty plus people in the bonfire ring, my friends, your friends, Erich, all staring, all motion ceased except for your soft mouth moving around mine. I'm almost too struck to kiss back, but I manage to make it at least seem like I'm trying. You stop. Pull away, but keep your forehead touching mine, we're breathing right next to each other and I feel your chest brushing against mine as we inhale and exhale and then you throw your arms around my neck and bury your face again into my shoulder, and I'm staring right into the towering flames, and I've never been this happy. I didn't mention that. I am happy. Ecstatic, elated in every way possible and every tiny atom of me is screaming with joy because not only are you holding me like I always imagined you would, you kissed me in front of our friends and your ex boyfriend. This happiness is incredible, better than I've ever felt. No one says anything. Everyone just looks and sees my dumb smile and now you're smiling again too. I got what I wanted. © 2011 Kev WaiterAuthor's Note
