A True Friend

A True Friend

A Poem by LostParadigm

Do you remember the stories mother told us?

All the people that loved us,

But now those distant far-off memories are all we have left,

The Pastures filled with nothing but hate and blood,

I’ll take that pain away and fill it with the good we’ve done,

Because life’s far too short for regrets don’t you think?

Take the anguish away,

Don’t let this beauty wither away,

I’ll remember you for who you were in the beginning and not just the end

Hold these feelings close never let go,

It won’t be long until the bleeding goes,

It pierces like dagger that is; unending is the fighting, the battles consume us

Forever is this repeating in my head; how long is it before my time comes,

Like a virus it’s taking over,

And the battle drum sounds; it’s hitting us loud,

Louder than words, it screams to us, fuelling the rage in us,

Take it, and rip it apart,

Leave you for dead,

Leave you broken inside,

Rip out your guts and gouge your eyes,

You’re not what I thought to be,

Lock your doors and barricade your windows.

Don’t wanna hear another sob-story of how bad your life was,

Don’t wanna hear people saying ‘you know you’re better off without her now’

Since when do you give a s**t about her anyway?

You were broken and alone, I told you ‘never let go’

It’s about time I followed my own advice,

Shall I let it get worse, or actually end it?

Take the pain away,

Don’t let this memory fade away,

Regardless, I think it’s time to break out.

Hold these feelings close ready set go,

Fill the pages in with the stories we wrote,

It burns like the flame that is; becoming the  inner-tyrant controls and destroys us,

Forever is this repeating in my head; how long is it before my time comes,

Like a plague, I’m getting all torn up inside

And the battle drum sounds; it’s killing us now,

1...2...3... POW, blood shooting out,

15 years of the violence… You can take it,

They will leave you for dead,

Leave you broken inside,

Rip out your guts and gouge your eyes,

You’re not what I thought to be,

Lock your doors and barricade your windows.

Now you leave me,

You were nothing but the world to me,

But I’ve gotta carry on, and so have you,

You were a true friend,

Not make-believe or just pretend,

But now I admit I was wrong,

But I can’t make amends,

Instead I hope you are happy where you are

Not bad. Don't forget that you don't have to cap every line, though - if you took out basically every comma in this, it'd look a lot more focused and it would flow better, I think. I'm not a big fan of the third from last stanza - I think the image is a little cliche and could be expressed better, but other than that you get your message across very well and your tone gives a nice sort of up-beat counterpoint to some of the imagery. Good work.
