A Full Moon Arose- part two to " A Crescent Moon Arose"

A Full Moon Arose- part two to " A Crescent Moon Arose"

A Poem by Nautili
"

second installment. Impending war between Diana (Moon) and Venus Goddesses.

"

“Diana is Goddess of Hunt,” reminded Mars.

“and her vanity requires she has ample attention.

It is natural for her to pursue the devotion of the stars,

And what she longs to pursue, she will capture and win.”

Upon seeing her face he added, “But Dear Venus,

it is no reason for your apparent consternation.

The stars will be smitten for only for a short season

When she again waxes round (like you are)

Your superior beauty once again

will be preferred by the constellations….

So be patient my dear, time is your friend.”

So Venus waited until Diana’s moon waxed.

And became round as a yellow balloon.

And still the stars’ admiration was intact.

Angry at Mars she cried,“ Why did I heed

 that witless buffoon?”

“ I should have acted with utmost  speed,

Everyday she gains more followers.

Why did Mar’s misleading advice I heed?

So I could wait to witness her growth in power?”

"Against her charms I do not stand a chance,

If I do not make the greatest of  haste,

Diana will become the new Goddess of Romance.

All my hard work these long centuries being

The Goddess of love and beauty …….. a waste!"

But who else to turn to but Mars?

So she swallowed her bitter pride.

She felt he would ultimately not refuse her,

For long ago he had asked her to be his bride.

but just to make sure she brought

her three ladies in waiting, "The Three Graces"

and a bottle from her friend Bacchus along,

For Mars, on many an occasion sought

to drink and enjoy  their lovely voices in song.

“Jealousy has filled my bones

straight to the marrow.

I want her gone, I want my stars’ allegiance back.

I know she is very proficient

With the bow and arrow,

But you Mars, NO military weapon do you lack!”

“She is a sure aim, but you, O God of War,

Are known to be TRULY  the very best!

You once told me that it was

 I that YOU DID ADORE,

Or is it Caissa with her game of chess

That you still pine for?

Now put your devotion to me to the test!"

"Or has it waned thin over the years?

Would seeing my fall

As  the rightful Goddess of Romance,

Still bring you to just and angry tears?

If yes, prove it, here is your chance!"

Although Mars did not think it wise

to start a war in the heavens,

Especially for the cause of vanity,

He felt bound by his love to help Venus,

For he could see Diana's amorous pull

and the stars’ subsequent betrayal

Was gravely affecting her sanity.

Excellent poetry - it reminds me very much of work I used to translate from Latin - in college. It has that old world feel to it. Wonderfully written

Aha, the Roman version of Mars. Ares notwithstanding. The Greeks held some contempt for Mars whereas the Romans, not so much. Diana and Venus at war. All the makings for a great climax. Great write, bring on the next chapter.
