Mismatched Match-up, First Mismatch

A Chapter by Kurera

“It’s raining like hell outside...” Rain splattered roughly against the train window as a boy tried to make out what was outside, not that it would’ve mattered.  His cat was constantly pouncing on him, trying to catch his attention. After learning abroad for five years, he wondered what had happened over the years of his absence at his hometown. At the age of fifteen, he considered what may have changed. He remembered that his mother told him that when he came back, his new younger sister would be there waiting for him. She said that his sister was human. He frowned at this.

“This girl needs a home,” his mother had said. “Though we aren’t the best family to take care of her, but we need to keep an eye on her.”

“I don’t get it,” he said. “What am I going to do about the girl, Somber?” The cat’s bell tingled.

“Just wait ‘till you meet ‘er. Then decide wha’ to do with ‘er,” the bell chimed. “Man, it’s so convenien’ tha’ your momma ‘nchanted the bell, so I can talk, right, Kurai? Kurai? You ‘kay?”

“Huh? Oh, no, it’s nothing,” he said. “Just wondering what I’m going to do...”

“Did I jus’ ge’ ‘nored!?”

“Your brother’s coming home, Shikke,” a woman said to a girl who was looking out the window. It was raining outside. “This will be the first time you are meeting him.”

“I’m scared that he might hate me. What am I going to do about him?”

“Well,” the woman said. “When you meet him you can decide.” Shikke let out a sigh. “Is something wrong?”

“Oh, nothing, Suzu. I was thinking of what I should do when I meet him,” Shikke said.

“It is rude to ignore your mother, Shikke.”

“Sorry.”

Shikke and her mother waited at the train platform as the train screeched to a halt. Her heart felt tight and her mind was foggy.

“I’m nervous,” she said. Suzu laughed.

“No need to worry, Shikke. I think you two will get along just fine.”

Kurai fidgeted in his seat as the train stopped. He felt his face flush a little.

“This is making me really nervous, Akuun,” he said. The cat sat down on his lap as the bell tingled.

“Don’ worry abou’ it. I ‘hink you two’ll ge’ ‘long fine.”

“If you say so...”

As Kurai got off the train, Akkun leapt onto his shoulder. Akkun’s black fur tickled against his nose and he sneezed.

“Bless you,” Akkun’s bell chimed.

“Thanks.”

“Here, kitty, kitty,” Shikke said. She noticed a white cat slinking around for food. The cat looked at her for a moment and bounded towards the tracks. “Oh! Be careful!” The cat bounded into a boy’s arms. On his shoulder was a black cat with a bell tied with a ribbon around its neck.

“Is this your cat?” he asked. He had brown hair and dark green eyes. Sharp features yet soft at the same time. She feared her face was starting to flush. She put her hands in front of her and the boy gave her the cat.

“I just found it nearby. I was hoping to bring it home. Um, what’s your-”

“Ah, there you are!” Suzu happily bounded up to them.

“Hi, Suzu,” Shikke and Kurai said at the same time. They looked at each other.

“You’re my brother!?” Kurai shrugged.

“It’s not that bad,” he said. “You are quite strange.”

“How rude!”

“Yeah? Got a problem with that?”

“You are very rude!”

“Yeah? Got a problem with that?”

“...”

“Yup, thought so.”

“I hate this guy,” Shikke said. Kurai shrugged. Suzu and Akkun sighed.

“This is not going to end well,” Suzu said. Akkun nodded in agreement.
