Curiosity Creates the cat

just a short story ^^

At the edge of a forest a ranger lives by itself, with the exception of a cat. The ranger’s gender is unknown for no one has seen its face or heard its voice for this ranger is a silent being and is always cloaked in a slightly baggy hooded black robe. Near its house grows a blackberry bush and an apple tree. There is a much more interesting story lurking beneath these plants than who the ranger is, however.

“Why do you keep going to that ranger’s home, anyway?” my mother would ask this young man that always went to visit the ranger’s home every day. “That place is not for decent people like us.” I did not know if I should have begged to differ.

Sometimes I followed that man to the ranger’s home. Whenever he was visiting, the ranger would be there, waiting for him. They’d go in the forest or into the ranger’s cabin, and only the man would talk, about the village, the villagers, and his own life. Though I never knew his name, I knew him like the back of my hand. The ranger, however, was still as mysterious as life on Earth. Never said anything at all, or at least, what I saw.

One day, after the man’s visit, the ranger caught me behind a bush, and instead of being yelled at, I found myself in the ranger’s cabin with a cup of tea and biscuits set before me. When the ranger sat down, a writing pad was set down before me. This is what it said:

You can come anytime you like, it’s not often I have another guest other than him. However, never eat the fruits that grow near my home, understand?

I never understood what the ranger meant by it, but I nodded anyway. One day, however, I found out what the note said. Apparently, he was wondering what was so dangerous about the plants. Do you know the phrase ‘Curiosity killed the cat’? Well, in this case, curiosity turned the man into a cat. When the ranger had seen him become a cat, it simply let out a voiceless sigh and led the cat into the cabin.

Not so long after that day, my mother died, so I had the freedom to visit the ranger. Later on, I found out that people even before that man had visited the ranger and all became cats because of curiosity due to eating those fruits. I, on the other hand, will never dare lay hand on any of those fruits, or so I thought.

One day, around five years after I saw the man turn into a cat, I started to become curious myself. That night, I went to the cursed plants, gently plucked one off the tree without thinking twice about my actions, and bit...
