Run Away LoveA Chapter by Maria C. DonadoFirst chapter of "Killer Mayhem". Enjoy.
As I ran through the empty streets of Mayhem town, being pursued by a pack of hysterical, wild, werewolves, and being watched from the shadows by vengeful vampires, I wondered what the hell was wrong with my life.
My best friend was dead, my best guy friend ever had just NOT denied that he killed her, and my worst enemy was trying to woo me into falling for him and believing that him and his kind weren’t Lili’s killers
‘This is all a bunch of bullshit!’ My legs were burning, reminding me that I had never ran this much before, and my mind was screaming for me to stop, swallow my pride and beg for mercy. But why the hell should I? I ran faster, my anger and fear fueling me.
I looked back at the rabid pack of werepeople, some half transformed and others in the full monty, tongues lolling in a mocking grin as if trying to tell me that they would catch me and rip out my organs, one by one. Like hell they would. I made a sharp right turn onto another ‘empty’ street and fell as a giant ball of fur smacked straight onto me, s**t.
“Where do you think you’re going, b***h?” Alexis. Damian’s ‘girlfriend’ I was in real deep s**t here. Before I could think of some witty comeback she slapped me with a clawed paw, sending me flying into a wall, the sound of breaking bone and the acid smell of blood filled the air. I screamed and held the damaged side of my face, blood gushing between my fingers and staining my PI shirt.
My screams filled the air, one after the other, as Alexis cornered me, and she leaned down, her half human half wolf face inches from mine. I tried to grab my gun….I failed…my arm; I couldn’t feel my shooting arm! Afraid to look away from Alexis I shot a quick look at my right arm; it was bent at a disgusting angle. Alexis saw and smiled, “Oh, the poor baby hurt herself…” she nudged my arm with her paw and cackled with delight when I screeched in pain.
“You know very well what I want!” Alexis screeched, “How could you put Damian in jail?! How could you do it when those leeches were the ones responsible for that damned girl’s death!?” She lashed out again and this time it was my leg that got the hit, blood spurted out and I groaned as unconsciousness flew in closer. The blood wouldn’t stop….it wouldn’t…
She was about to deliver the final blow when I heard a hiss from the ruins of an abandoned inn, and the rest was quick. I heard a snapping of bones and a shower of blood flew everywhere. Alexis was snapped in half, her remains left on the floor, twitching. I looked up with my blood soaked eyes, and gasped when I saw Xander, standing there looking like a hero.
“Run. We’ll keep them back.” He said simply and I didn’t wait for him to say so twice. I gathered up my strength and pushed away the pain to the back of my head; I grasped my broken arm and attempted to get up. Failed horribly. Xander cursed and pulled me up in a flash, he wrinkled his nose at my blood, trying to keep himself from eating me alive. I whimpered in pain as my arm hung there, useless, and swallowed my pride to thank him for saving me. “Th-Thanks.”
“No pro-“
“But why?” Curiosity killed the cat. But in this case cop. Blood flowed into my mouth and I saw Xander cringe with hunger. Why would he rescue me when he had every right to want me dead?
“This should be enough of an answer.” He wrapped an arm around my waist and pulled me in…to kiss me? Surprise and fear surged through me. His lips felt deathly cold on mine but good on the wounds Alexis had made on my face. Xander pulled away quickly and wiped stray blood from his cheek, probably wanting to lick it off. “Now get the hell out of here, Sage.” I stared at him in disbelief but ran as fast as my wounded legs would allow me, Xander was just a dot in the background as I ran, trying to save myself. I coaxed my legs into running faster, making sharp turns falling and screeching in pain, making oxygen creep into my lungs. I felt dizzy, as if I was going to die from blood loss, when I saw the flashing lights of a nearby motel.
My brain screamed with happiness as I stumbled my way to the place, almost there, so close. I was about 20 feet away when the pain started. The horrible mindcurdling pain, my limbs ached and my legs gave in, my mouth opened as if to scream but nothing came out. My veins were turning black and blue, traveling up my arms and back down, my skin felt like it was being peeled back with a knife, inch by inch. I shook on the cold street, the cheery people in the motel oblivious to what was happening. My eyes were bulging out, “Ahh!!!” An invisible force was creeping into my mind, breaking the walls I had worked so hard to build over the years, all the secrets and pain I had pushed back into my brain came lashing back out. Lili’s crime scene pictures, bloody and gory, the body tattered like a rag doll. Mama and daddy’s bodies, their pale, blue faces and unfocused eyes staring into space…Damian going crazy on a full moon and ripping my arm, almost to shreds.
My blood burned, my brain was confused, crashing into itself, panicking, hysterical, and furious that someone had dared to violate its borders.
“Well hello, Sage…” I know that voice…seductive, soothing, sweet and deep like molasses.
“J-Jae…” His name felt thick in my mouth, the sound vibrating throughout my raw throat and making me flinch. What the hell was he doing to me? His essence filled my brain again and the gory scenes flashed once more like neon lights. I groaned and writhed on the floor, trying to set myself upright, the pain flashed through me once more and I screeched. Damn it.
“Easy. Easy.” He kneeled down next to me, stroking my hair, a mocking smile on his face. “You shouldn’t try to move, sweetheart.” He made a move to pick me up.
“Don’t you touch me, you sick b*****d.” I choked on the words. I wanted to slap him. Make him take his greedy hands off me. “Xander would kick your God damned a*s i-“
Jae’s angry essence knocked the breath out of me, “You punk…” The pain of him inside of me came stronger than ever, and I screamed out loud.
‘What the f**k is wrong with you!?’
‘I’m leaving.’
‘I thought you cared about me…’
Everything went dark…
“What the f**k is wrong with you today? You’re acting so weird, Sage.” Lili’s voice had come to me from the living room and I had frowned.
“You think he could kill me!? Good God, Sage! I’m f*****g leaving.” She stormed out of the kitchen and I followed. “What the hell are you doing? It’s 10 at night, where are you going to stay?” “…” “Liliana! Adonde crees que vas?! Where do you think you’re going?” I snapped at her in Spanish, meaning I was serious. “No quiero estar aqui. I don’t want to be here.” She hissed and walked to the door. “Don’t go to Damien’s, I’ll call him and tell him to bring you home.” I strode to her and tried to grab her hand. She snatched away from me, “Don’t worry, Sage. I won’t go to him.” And then she walked out, stomping angrily to her car. My eyes watered up as I saw her back out of the driveway…mom had always said it was bad to stay angry… I swallowed my pride and texted her, “I love you Lili.” Five minutes later she texted me back, “I love you too.” The next day my coworker called me. Lili was dead.
