Zoo of a Life Time

Zoo of a Life Time

A Story by Katie
"

A story I had to write for English. It is about a zoo that has extrodiary animals, you would never think were real.

"

Alarm clock ringing; my mind captured by grogginess; my eyes blurred with sleepiness. I jump up in excitement, when I realize today is the day I start my job at the High Level zoo. I’ve never been to the zoo in town before, as it was shut down for renovations. But finally it’s opening and I’m getting the job I’ve always wanted. As I get ready hurriedly all my thoughts were about what I could expect. “Maybe I will see some zebras, or giraffes, or maybe monkeys!” But oh boy was I wrong. I was about to see anything but monkeys.

When I got to the doors of the zoo I was stunned. This place was beautiful, and look nothing like the rundown building it used to be. After I brought my jaw back up I was greeted by the manager, and also the guy that was going to be training me today. His name is Jake he appeared to be about the same age as me. He let me know that today was going to be a day I would never forget.

My first job of the day was to clean out a cage. When I entered the cage there was pink rocks all over the ground. I was told to scoop them all up and throw them into a garbage can. Out of curiosity I had to ask what type of rocks these were, I’ve never seen anything like then before. Jake just laughed and said “There not rocks…” With a smirk on his face he said “its unicorn poop.” Disgusted, I dropped the shovel immediately. When all the “pink rocks” were cleaned up we headed out to what Jake called the “slop yard.”

The slop yard was filled will little green dragons. The dragons were rough, scaly and were lime green. Our task in the slop yard was to feed these dragons. I was terrified, as these dragons looked vicious. Little did I know these lime green creatures were playful, and instead of spitting fire, they spit blue glitter. Jake brought out a box of cheerios. “Is it time for a break?” He Smiled. “No these dragons only eat cheerios. But after this we can take a break. We have apples for us. Unless you want to eat dragon food.” I couldn’t help but to laugh at this. Finally it was time for our break. I didn’t notice how tired I actually was until now. Relieved I slumped into a chair, while I munched on the delicious apple. In what seemed like a minute our break was over. Regretfully I stood ready to get back to work.

The next exhibit we went to was full of multiple caves and tunnels. I couldn’t image what would live here. Until I seen, small purple people looking creatures. These things looked almost alien like. Its ears appeared razor sharp; eyes bulging. Jake filled me in that these alien like creatures were goblins. The assignment here was checking on the babies. “The mothers get very protective, and defensive. So we have to be very careful.” Jake warned. So we cautiously entered the caves where all the newborn goblins were kept. Mothers anxiously hovered around their children; Ready to attack when needed. A mother was approaching me looking ready to pounce. Filled with fear, I dashed out of the cave. Jake came out seconds later shouting “why would you run out like that?” “She was about to attack me” I countered. “You almost made things very hectic. When you ran out it startled every other mother in there.” “I’m sorry I didn’t know. She was going to attack me.” “It’s okay everything is fine. Just next time be calm and walk out slowly.” After this incident we headed back to the break room. In the break room Jake informed me, “Well the day is over. Thank you for helping me today.” “Already? Well thank you for training me I learned a lot and had a lot of fun.” I replied. “See you tomorrow.” I excitedly said while leaving.

When I got home I was utterly exhausted. I pulled on pajamas and crawled into bed; my mind racing. All I could think about was the animals I seen today. Who every thought I would see a unicorn, or a goblin today? Who even knew they existed? Slowly tiredness captured me, dragging me into sleep. All I dreamt about was what would happen tomorrow.
