1. New day, new life

1. New day, new life

A Chapter by Krista

One day a young boy who just moved from Brazil to the United States. He barely knew any english and he was to start school the next day. He was scared of what people would think of him as he knew very little English. For him it was like he was starting all over again. A new life a new day is what he thought.

He was only 15 years old and his name was Eduardo. He walked the entire way to school and people laughed at him because of the way he talked and looked. He didn't realize that people in the US dressed differently than in Brazil. He thought it was always going to rain here just like in Brazil and always carried a rain coat and an umbrella. It made him stick out from the other kids.

He walked into the school office and asked for his schedule except he asked in Portuguesse. The lady at the office didn't understand anything he said. She asked him to speak English but he said he didn't know much English. He only knew a few words, he tried to ask in English but his accent was so strong he had to try several times until she understood.

His first class was English. He walked into the room and asked where his seat is. Again his accent was so strong the teacher didn't understand him at first. People in the room started laughing at him quietly. The teacher told the kids to stop laughing at him. They got quiet because none of them wanted to get in trouble. As soon as he sat down people started throwing things at him while the teacher was writing on the whiteboard. Of course as soon as the teacher turned back around it stopped as the kids didn't want to get in trouble.

The same thing happened in his next class which was math. He didn't understand the problems and asked for help from the teacher. The teacher told him to ask his peers for help though. He saw a girl towards the back of the room who was just sitting there quietly. He went back to her and introduced himself to her. "Hi, my name his Eduardo. Whats yours?" he asked her. The girl stared at him for the longest time before noticing he didn't go away. She sighed and answered" I am Alexis. Do you need something?" "Um..-t-this math problem?" C-could you help me por favor?"hes stuttered as he asked her. She sighed again and said," You are the new kid aren't you?" "Sim. I-yes I-i am." he answered her. " I will help you but only this one time. Okay?" she told him. "O-okay. Graças." he said. "Two things though first. You have an interesting accent. Where did you move from and what does graças mean?"  .Um I moved from South America and graças means thanks in portuguese. Sorry it's my main languange it's basically all I know." "It's fine Eduardo. Don't worry about it". All the kids just stared at them. Wondering why she was helping the weird kid. They laughed behind her back. Called her crazy, weirdo just because she was being nice to him. The kids didn't understand why anyone would help him at all.

Toward the end of the class, Alexis asked him what his next class was. He told her it was Science with Mr. Sands. She offered to show him where that was but he said," no thanks. I already caused you problema suficiente. I'm sorry. I meant to say I have caused you enough trouble. Did you see how da pessoas were looking at us?" "It doesn't matter. It doesn't bother me. I am used to it. People can be so mean to new kids and anyone that is different. I am already different so they can do whatever they want to me they think. You just can't let it bother you and give them what they want Eduardo because they will just keep at it because they know it bothers you. I'll see you in lunch" she told him.
