Song of the Abused

Song of the Abused

A Poem by Krista

Screaming of a child,

who just got beaten.

Tears of a child,

who once believed that parents,

were supposed to love and cherish their children,

for who they are.

That is the song of the abused.

In the night,

a child calls out for help.

Screaming and crying,

the child runs from a parent,

who drinks too much.

When she runs,

she goes to her room,

locks the door,

and hopes for once that she is safe.

She prays to God,

asking and begging for some help and guidance.

Hoping he heard her,

she closes her eyes and goes to sleep.

Then her mom comes staggering in drunk,

shakes her awake,

just to beat her.

The child takes the beating,

without crying,

knowing that crying only makes it worse,

and frustrates her abuser.

The entire time,

From beginning to end,

The child thinks to herself,

“Guess I wasn’t safe after all”.

After her mom leaves,

and she knows the beating is over,

she lets the tears run down her face,

showing her weakness.

Screaming of a child,

that just got beaten again.

Tears of a child,

who believes she deserved what she got.

That is the song of the abused.

Next morning when she awakes,

she walked down the stairs,

trying to hide the pain she is in from the night before.

Her mom asks,

“What happened to you?”

like she didn’t know.

The child knew it was a test,

and answered,

“Nothing mom,

I fell down the stairs remember?”

Her mom smiles,

and the child knows she answered correctly.

It was a well rehearsed lie,

to be told to anyone who asked.

She goes to school,

complains of pain to the teacher.

The teachers gives her the nurses pass,

but before letting her leave pulls her aside to ask,

when she sees the childs arm

“Child, where did those bruises come from?”

The child answers

“ Miss it’s nothing,

I fell down the stairs at the house.”

Though she hates lying to her teacher.

She walks to the nurse,

the nurse asks her the same question as the teacher,

upon seeing the bruises.

The child answers the same way,

she did with the teacher,

“ I fell down the stairs at my house”

The nurse knowing it was a lie,

let it go and gave the child an asprin.

But before letting the child leave,

she whispers,

“Please tell someone soon”

The child answers,

“I will eventually,

I’m getting tired of falling down the stairs.”

Screaming of a child,

that just lied for the last time.

Tears of a child,

who wishes she could,

tell the truth of what happened.

Ten years pass by,

the girl has grown into a women.

The once abused little girl,

is no longer scared of her mother.

She goes to see her abuser,

she tells her quietly,

“You ever lay a hand on me again,

I will call the cops.

I know I said it before,

but I mean it this time.
The mom not believing a word the women said replies,

“ I know you’re not threatening me,

You know better”

The women answers bravely,

“Yes I know better,

but I’m done with you controlling and abusing me.

I won’t let it happen anymore!”

Screams of  a women,

who just bravely told off her abuser.

Tears of a child,

who thought it would never end.

That’s the song and story of the abused

This is a beautiful poem with the tragic reality of what happens to some.. The repetition you use is quite powerful, tying together the theme of this poem. No one deserves to sing that horrid song, yet many do, and many still are, of which you gave an example here, too afraid to say anything about what is happening to them.. Overall, this is a wonderful poem with a disturbing and sad beginning, but a wonderful and strong end.
