Thank youA Story by KatharineA person who can just make your day by just being present.
I clearly remember that night. My best friend and I were texting before I started my stressful shift, we were talking about how we can most likely hang out after I am done with work. He knew I was being supervised by the manager who despised me and wished me luck before I stowed my phone away into my locker. I took a deep breath and exhaled with a great sigh. Here we go, I thought to myself as I shouted, "DOOR!"
"I'm sorry, but the wait is just going to be 10 minu-" I calmly explained to the customer before I was interrupted by the obviously charismatic manager who chimed, "I'm sorry, Ma'm! Is there a problem?" He shoved me off to the side where I was lightly slammed into the window that encased my small desk area. Oh, how I hate you, I thought to myself. Of course, she starts her rant, and the manager is trying to calm her down as he keeps giving me side glares. It's already 8 o'clock, I want to go home so bad. The manager forcefully pushes her menus into my chest and growls, "Go take them to Table 8, now." I return and the manager standing there with his arms crossed, maybe restraining himself for lunging at my throat to choke me to death. I apologized but as I tried to explain she was a bit out of line, he starts lecturing me, with a cursing tone. After he's done, he decides I can clock out, there is no wait anyways. He marches away, with a Mein Kamf attitude. I get on my knees so I can get the rag and windex from underneath my desk. At least I can do my side work and leave my favorite critics. I hear the front door open. Oh god, I worried to myself, one more guest? I quickly shot up and was about to cheer the biggest greeting ever attempted, until I recognized the man's face. It was my best friend, who was still wearing the tuxedo from the wedding he was supposed to be at. He had his welcoming smile beautifully displayed with his blue eyes sparkling from the same light that was beaming down my neck. His blonde hair was a bit messy, but he truly was a breath of fresh air. The first real smile from the whole shift cracked on my face and I released a thankful giggle, "You're here." He shrugged, "What kind of best friend would I be, if I didn't check up on my best friend when I knew she was in distress?" I asked, "What about the wedding?" He simply shrugged once more, "I explained to my parents there was something important I had to do." He stayed until I finished my side-work and walked me out of the restaurant when I clocked out. We were strolling side-by-side in the warm summer night. He was wearing a tuxedo, while I was wearing a classy black dress with black flats. Someone even commented as they passed us, that we're a cute couple. We laughed hard at that statement. It's funny to look back at moments like those, were the building blocks to us falling in love. That's why I say though, thank you for the surprises that scared my negative thoughts and moments away.
