Separated

Separated

A Chapter by K.S. McClure

The council members were in disbelief. It was unheard of for a Sage to be kidnapped, yet, according to Chihanna, thats exactly what happened to Marquis along with sixty-seven others.

Chihanna watched the wave of shock pass over their faces before continuing. "The council at the Water mountain has chosen Ami to act as Sage until Maquis's return since he had not yet picked a succesor. She is a good choice, has a level head and quick wit. She will make a good sage if Marquis does not return."

"What are we to do then?" asked a womain in her sixties. "We cant just sit and do nothing."

"I'm afraid thats all we can do at the moment." Chihanna answered. "We have to keep the rest of the people safe. In three days, I have a meeting at the temple with the rest of the sages. We will decide what to do then. Until then, we just have to sit tight. Now, please excuse me. I am in need of rest."

As Chihanna walked out the door, she motioned for Kelsey to follow her. They walked together to Chihanna's private apartment. Kelsey smiled when she saw the simple, yet beautiful room. It reflected one of Chihanna's favorite sayings: "There is always beauty in simplicity."

They both sat on the floor, propping themselves up with the many pillows strewn about.

"I am going to try and get the sages to move the mountains together." Chihanna said after a while. "Back to the way they were long ago, before our ancestors separated them."

Kelsey looked at Chihanna as if she had just turned purple. "What do you mean 'back to the way they were'? The mountains have been separated for as long as anyone can possibly remember, and even longer than that. How could they have possibly been moved?"

Chihanna smiled. "You learn things when you become a sage. You get the memories of all the sages who have passed on before you. Well, most of them anyways. Long ago, when our people first started to appear, the sages locked their memories so no one remembers those first years. You posess all of their memories, and you know how to do some things, and when not to do things. You also get the gift of knowing when a new Ninabi in your division is born. But enough of that. The point is, long ago, all of the Ninabi Mountains were connected. Then, whenever Columbus discovered the Americas, the mountains were separated. I propose to bring them together again. This way, the rebels will have a hard time infiltrating any of the mountains and it will be easier to communicate with the other sages."

"But why were the mountains separated?"

"Oh, it was because we are supposed to watch out for the people who did not posess our abilities. So the Ninabi people separated. The known world was divided into five parts, with a mountain in each of those five parts. The only mountain to have moved since then is the water mountain, which is now located in Antartica. The Temple, however, has never been moved. The five mountains used to surround the Temple. The Temple being in the center of all five mountains. Dont you remember that the Temple has five entries? One for each division. The Temple can be moved, though, only with a mystic, and if it was not for the memories of Sages past, I would say mystics were a myth."

"What are mystics?"

Chihanna yawned before answering. "Oh I'll tell you some other time. I believe I should get some rest. I will see you tomorrow."
