Certainty

Certainty

"

(Ch. 3) Adam's POV

"

Adam’s life was not a hoot. By no means was it exciting or wonderful.

Adam worked at an ad agency that paid well enough to help him get by and even get a few things he wanted, but besides that, he did not especially enjoy his past, present, or future.

Adam was single, a victim of past heartbreak. He did not like to talk about that area of his sad, sad life.

His parents had gotten divorced when he was seven. He did not believe in true love anymore because of that and his horrible past experience, of which he still refused to revisit in his mind. He had no brothers or sisters, so had no one to lean on or go to who would understand him when he went through his phase of divorce-induced sadness.

Adam was not very emotional. Now, this part of himself he did like. Because he never showed his emotions, he felt as if he could always protect himself from being vulnerable. He kept this wall up at all times and not even his closest friends could pull him completely out of his shell. That way, he believed, he could never be hurt so long as he gave off the air that he simply did not care.

All this and more made Adam believe there was no hope for him in the future; that he would be living the same exact life that he was living now for the rest of his time on earth. His past was not the greatest, his present wasn’t so fantastic either, and because his future was bound to be as unexciting and dull as it was now, there was nothing he was especially looking forward to. Past, present, and future, all down the drain. At least in this, he had certainty in his life.
