(Ch. 2) Zoey's POV

"

Frazzled and frustrated, Zoey Nelson collapsed into a taxicab after walking around for hours looking for the bus stop. She knew she was late to work already - after consulting the new rhinestone-embedded watch her boyfriend had just gotten her - and although it was such a long way and it would be awfully expensive, she finally successfully hailed a taxicab and tumbled in before anyone else could snatch it. She gave the greasy old driver directions to her workplace and then immediately sunk into the almost relieving feel of the cab’s scratchy, torn up seat.

Zoey Nelson had just moved to New York City and so far, it had not been the greatest experience. She did not know her way around at all and was already extremely nervous about starting her first day at her new job. She had hardly slept at all the night before, and although her boyfriend Todd assured her that she would do great, she wasn’t so sure she could believe even him.

Todd, her blue-eyed, sandy blonde-haired, body-of-a-Spartan boyfriend, was the love of her life. He meant everything to her. Ever since the first day they had met (back when she lived in Illinois), she knew this man was too good to be true. He was handsome, sweet, and... well, perfect. Zoey often wondered what a man like that could possibly see in a hazel-eyed, coffee-haired, un-athletic and uninteresting woman like herself. She constantly wondered if he would ever cheat on her, but she decided that that was just her low self-esteem and the unrealistic nature of it all that caused her to think that way.

The day of her flight to New York, Todd had come to see her off, and as they stood in the airport, he had held her in his arms and promised her that he would miss her everyday and try to come up to visit as often as possible.

“Zoey, don’t cry. I’ll still love you,”Todd had said, wiping away the tear that had trickled down her cheek. “I promise.”

And with that, he presented her with his going away gift, a simple promise ring, which he gently slipped onto her finger. He softly kissed her on the forehead, and gave her one last embrace as she cried into his chest with a bittersweet feeling in her heart. She was leaving the love of her life and probably would not see him for months, at least, but he had just given her a ring with the promise of a life together in the future. A promise that he would wait for her. A promise she trusted and clung to desperately as she gave him her last kiss before she boarded her flight. As the plane took off, she looked out the window hoping to see her love, not realizing that her final farewell was a farewell in more ways than one.
