Familiar Stranger

Familiar Stranger

A Poem by Kristina Yoder

Dear familiar stranger-
I know a thing or two.
I put my needs in front and
look through them at you.

From here I see
a complement to me.
A searching for something
that used to be.
A familiarity.

What once could erase
the ultimate fate
of staying still in this
place.

But how true are you?
How real?
Just a self-constructed image that
I steal.

Hanging on 'cause it provides relief
from the empty, the lack
the aimless floating on the
sea.

So stay right there, if you please-
-maybe I can have just this
moment and
freeze
your stare
your approach.
Maybe I'll become a coach
and not press unpause
until you're real.
'Til you give me cause.

I love the flow and the rhyme scheme!
But how true are you?
How real?
Just a self-constructed image that
I steal.

Hanging on 'cause it provides relief
from the empty, the lack
the aimless floating on the
sea.
