A Party For Pain

A Party For Pain

A Poem by Kristina Yoder

Welcome, pain-
I see you came to our
costume party as
desire-
what admirable attire!

A flowing gown of wit and charm-
complete with
reciprocal advances
adorning your arms.

A brooch of silver, like the tongue of thee
who you came to present to a young lass,
just before three.

An ornate mask bordering two eyes,
that draws in all those who can't see
the disguise-
A pity, for what lies behind
is only loss-
a funeral pyre.

So come in! Be merry!
Dance, sing and drink the Sherry-
For when you depart,
as we all very well know,
all that will be left of you is a
detached and yearning
heart-
now go.

I enjoyed this poem. Desires are capable of causing pain and leaving one yearning for more. Seldom desire is what we perceive it to be. Well done.
