A Poem by Kori Ricketts
"

Its not the revoultuion thats powerful, its the people in it.

"

Good [morning, afternoon, evening]
My name is Kori Ricketts,
And I am a walking revolution.
Not to be confused as an
Activist,
Political participant,
Or Prophetic Lyricist.
I AM
A walking revolution.

Standing against the formalities used to satisfy mediocrity.
I embody no superiority,
But,
An imagination that visualizes a rare commodity formally known as individuality.
For I remember the originator of black polished nails and tattooed stars.
Double syllable nicknames and a taste for exotic women.
White boy punk rock and an eclectic musical taste.
Yet,
I stare at those who pass by and they all resemble her.
Suddenly everyone is a ‘star’
And brand themselves as such, mistaking the perpetrators for her.
Or another I know.
With her infamous line
“Coach is the poor man’s Gucci,”
She made it ok to be bougie…
Or excuse me,
Apart of the bourgeoisie.
Please feel free to correct me.
Or can you?
For you feed into the colloquialisms so deeply that your mind cannot process proper speech…
But I digress.
She reign with an education not of Ivy League,
But of equal prestige, for Cum Laude follows her degree.
Pompous and prissy because she has reason to be.
Or Ms. Miami.
Now published poet,
Once ‘Not So Comfortable in Duval’ while professing her “Ode to Contingency”.
A woman who emits both euphonious and cacophonous phrases and demands attention.
Hypnotizing minds through thoughts and eyes.
Still, I am mesmerized.
And last but not least,
My poetic equal.
Beginning in the city of Liberty, migrating to that of a gay man’s dream.
With three degrees at twenty-three and struggles to match.
Passion and perseverance in her means,
And hopefully one day managing me.
I am a walking revolution.
In revolt against all the idiosyncrasies of society that diminish the elevation of women.
Fighting duplicity and malice against homosexuality.
Disproving stereotypes and redefining morality.
Never being influenced my immaturity,
Keeping strong women with me.
